Northern Rail and Trans Pennine, same day as Burnley at home.
Inconvenient. But that’s the whole idea of them.

That's why I've let everyone know as soon as possible so's they can start making other plans.Northern Rail and Trans Pennine, same day as Burnley at home.

60k pa is a good salary, my mate joined Northern Rail as a guard in 2007 aged 39 with the promise he’d be in line for Train Driver training after his initial spell there. He’d left a very good (but boring) job working as a Pensions Manager at the Co-op in town. The clear shortage of train drivers implies they are not paid enough. Simple supply and demand which in other areas - say rentals - Tories say is both good and inevitable.
Alternatively, the shortage of train drivers is due to the train companies being too tight-arsed to employ sufficient of them, or to pay for their training.
Tories want to suspend the laws of supply and demand when they benefit working people, but not in any other situation. Fancy that!

Fast forward to today and he’s still a guard despite several applications for the Train Driver positions, he has asked the question several times why he’s not been given an opportunity but only gets “we don’t think you’re suitable and other candidates had more qualities than you”. He’s a very bright lad.
What makes it more galling for him is one of the lads we play golf told his Son in Law about the salary of Train Drivers at Northern Rail, he applied, didn’t have to start as a guard and got on the Training Programme, he’s now a fully fledged driver earning over 60k plus overtime, go figure.
Definitely, he’s a staunch Labour supporter but that shouldn’t have gone against him, as I said he always got the same answer when he questioned why he wasn’t given a chance. At 56 he’s now given up, he’s been shrewd with his income, investments and pensions so he’s not too bothered but if he’d got the drivers job he’d probably be over 100k better off.He was either lied to or he mistook a “promise” for an opportunity to apply.
Just spoke to him, it’s only the Driver’s who are on strike now, the rest have settled and he’s working on the 31’st. Apparently they have a limited service on.He was either lied to or he mistook a “promise” for an opportunity to apply.
In a lot of industries seniority was used to promote people so start at the bottom and pretty much get promoted unless totally unsuitable on service this practice was outlawed due to age discrimination legislation possibly he got caught up in that?60k pa is a good salary, my mate joined Northern Rail as a guard in 2007 aged 39 with the promise he’d be in line for Train Driver training after his initial spell there.
