I'd assume it's pretty standard that the player himself doesn't literally pay the release clause and the money comes from the buying club.
Part of La Liga rule states that the player must pay the release clause. There was a load of nonsense when United bought Herrera and Bayern bought Martinez.
I saw plenty of reports stating that even if the club gives said player the money to buy himself out, it then becomes taxable income and the club ends up paying more than their release clause.
