wow - adrian peterson's 2yr old boy has been killed

One of Adrian Peterson's sons passed away Friday. The 2-year-old died of injuries from an aggravated assault on Wednesday, Sioux Falls police confirmed to NFL Media.

The accused attacker, Joseph Robert Patterson, 27, was charged with aggravated assault and aggravated battery of an infant, police spokesman Sam Clemens said. Clemens said Patterson was in a relationship with the child's mother at the time in Sioux Falls.

In light of the boy's death, the charges against Patterson will be reviewed and additional changes might be added. Patterson is being held in the Minnehaha County Jail on $750,000 cash bond.

Clemens told NFL Media earlier Friday that a 2-year-old child was in critical condition after sustaining head injuries on Wednesday that appeared to be consistent with abuse. Police did not name the boy, but Peterson and his father Nelson both spoke about the terrible situation earlier Friday.

"Thank you to my family, my fans and fans of other teams for their support," Peterson wrote on Twitter. "The NFL is a fraternity of brothers and I am thankful for the tweets, phone calls and text messages from my fellow players. God Bless everyone and thank u so much."

Peterson missed practice Thursday, but returned to the Minnesota Vikings' facility on Friday. He indicated to the media that he planned to play in Sunday's game. Peterson's comments to the media came before news of his son's passing became public.

"I should start off by saying I really appreciate all the support that I've been receiving from fans (and) the Vikings organization," Peterson said Friday afternoon. "This is a private matter, and I would ask you all to please just respect my privacy and not ask at all about the situation at hand. Thanks."

The news is absolutely heartbreaking. We send our condolences to Peterson and his family at this unimaginable time.

Mother's boyfriend apparently responsible.

Can't imagine what he's going through right now.

Seriously sad news and I'm gutted for Petersen but why the hell has he not been to see his child on his death bed and why on earth is he training yesterday and today and playing tomorrow? I just cannot understand that at all.

Edit: Sorry he did fly to the hospital on Wednesday, but my point about training yesterday and playing tomorrow still stands. I know they are phenomenal athletes and professionals, but there is no way on earth he should be playing.

Favre decided to play in what was arguably one of the best games of his career just a day after his father passed away

He'll be running for his kid on Sunday

I might be wrong on this, but your father passing away and your son being what looks like murdered, are two different things. I guess a heart attack is sudden too, but I just cannot imagine playing a game a couple of days after the murder of your baby.

I doubt either is feeling or felt any less grief, sadness and anger than the other.

Rather shocked at that reasoning of yours if I'm honest.

NFL 2013

he's probably in denial, does't want to take the time to think about what's happened as it's incomprehensible and you would just fall apart - he's probably not even making conscious choices right now

keeping yourself busy is one way of coping and i guess he's going to throw himself into his running like never before, go for the season record

if he does do it this way, the off season will hit him like a ton of bricks, assuming he doesn't have some kind of breakdown sooner

You would be equally angry if your father died of a heart attack than if someone had murdered your 2 yo baby? I haven't had either happen in my family thankfully so in that sense I will never understand. Grieving affects everyone differently but I'm pretty certain if my baby had been murdered then playing a game would be the last thing on my mind. I'm not criticising his decision, that's for him to decide but it's not something I cannot imagine doing.
