NFL?

Thing I've always found funny is that the things Americans complain about in football/soccer are the same things Europeans complain about in American football

Both sides say it's boring, slow, not enough scoring, and the players are pussies...always found this ironic

Linebackers are NOT 350 lbs.. If you are 250 and a LB you are a big one!! The interior linemen are all near 300 and many over 300 some WELL over 300 and still quite agile....

Things that make you go hmmmm.

American Football, a sport played with the hands.
Kicking the ball is a HUGE part of the game and often decides the outcome. So what do you think about the throm in being a part of FOOTBALL, then Rory DeLap??? More people spouting off about shit they know little about FFS!!!

-- Fri Dec 09, 2011 10:23 am --

I never claimed that I know a lot about NFL in the first place. Its a American sport which would never take off anywhere apart from the US. Fuck me players are trained in so many different areas for the sport they do. I could see a rugby player if they were trained well doing well in the NFL whats wrong with what I am saying. Runners down the wings are shit at catching a ball and I would fancy any rugby player to take the ball in the air from them.

Fuck the NFL there isnt the demand for it to work out in Europe they tried and they failed. Too much stop start for my liking and I stand by my pussies statement.

Taskin you wouldnt catch me in a padded up suit doing a girly dance when I catch the ball. Fuck me let the yanks have there pussy sport.
So then how much do rugby players make. Lets say at ALL ends, low end, average and top stars???

The NFL has become horrible, it's more about advertising than it is about the game. They've added another 15 minutes of commercials to each game in the last 10 years. If you think it's boring on TV you'd really hate it in person. The players will literally just stand around on the field for 5 minutes at a time waiting for the ref to give them the signal that the commercials are over.

And these criticisms aren't from some bitter fan of a horrible team. I've been a Steelers fan since the 70's and seen them win more Super Bowls than any other team. The sad fact is that they've changed the rules to discourage good defense, they've expanded to the point that the talent leve is pathetically thin and they're more worried about money than the product on the field. And don't even get me started on the jackass celebrations after almost every play or the fact that half of the players are arch criminals...

The adverts and stops make me nuts. You should do what I do and this works if there is only one game on at the time. DVR the game. Let it get ahead by about 45 minutes. THEN watch it. You blow thru the adverts and halftime and you end up catching up near the end of the game.....

The NFL is a great game once you understand what is going on & care who wins the game you are watching (be it through liking a team, hating a team or betting on a team).

The NFL v Rugby? They both use a non-round ball & you have to be strong/tough/fit to play both sports. This is where the similarities end.

I'm a Denver Broncos fan. It's been very strange having them pick up so much media coverage in recent weeks. Even stranger have been all the wins. Big game v the Bears on Sunday. Broncos actually start as favourites - not sure if this is a good thing or not...

So lets get this straight, what people like about the game is that the players are very big and hit each other very hard and often?

The game lacks skill and grace. It is an ugly game that revels in vicarious enjoyment of brutal ugliness.

The Brutal hits are a big part of the game. The powers that be are trying to get the hits out of the game especially the huge full on head-to-head hits, but that is trying to change the nature of the game that's been around for a hundred years.

But to say the game lacks skill?

The running backs have to have perfect power, speed and balance to dodge both their own 24 stone lineman and the rushing 21 stone defense lineman.

The quarterbacks have to read the defense in a split second and throw the ball accurately to wide receivers running near 20mph who themselves need to run certain routes, catch the ball being thrown at speed whilst trying not to get their heads taken off by the corner-backs.

To get a better understand of the skills do please type NFL SportScience or NFL Combine into youtube and that should help you out.

I don't need to watch Youtube, I'm an American who attended UNL and watched the Cornhuskers win three in a row. I played the game for over ten years. It was my primary experience in sport and sport culture, and all glorious talk aside football pales in comparison to the skill and athleticism required to play "soccer".

Fair enough.

To me, in football and american football you need different skill sets and any discussion about which skills are better will be pointless.

-- Fri Dec 09, 2011 4:09 pm --

Will be great if Tebow takes Denver to the play-offs, wonder if he'll do it through over-time yet again? :)

The weird thing is that the wins have come without playing too well. The ball was getting thrown pretty well in the 2nd half v the Vikings though. Thomas being the main target having been injured most of the time since being a 1st round pick 2 years ago. Good to see him back and looking good.

Definitely going to be an interesting last 4 games of the season - and hopefully into the post-season.

I cant help but think he will be exposed when he comes up against an elite defence, but if I was Fox/the Broncos, I'd ride that option wave as long as i could!

Cheers for the thread to chat about the game btw OP ;)
