NHS Pay Award, letter to Johnson from my union, please sign if you can

id rather have my 15% that Iv lost since 2010

But I bet you haven’t lost 15%.

Mrs MB is a band 6 nurse. Inflation linked top of her band should be £43,078 and it is actually £37,890. So it looks like she is being underpaid by 13% (which I guess is where you are coming from), however she is also getting an extra £6,025 in tax free allowance since 2010 so she is actually about £900 better off than she was in 2010.

Band 5s are £2k better off, 4s nearly £3k better off, 3s nearly £4K better off. And that’s ignoring that you would have been paying MORE tax on those earnings so in actual fact you are taking home even more money than these numbers suggest.

Things aren’t always as they seem. You still deserve a decent pay rise though.

Inflation 2010-2020 isn’t 31% so those numbers are just wrong I’m afraid. It’s just over 22% (CPI which is the inflation we feel in our pockets), for the purposes of my numbers I used 26% to get us to 2021. If someone can provide a credible source for the 33.1% I’m happy to adjust accordingly.

I’m not arguing against the NHS getting a pay rise, quite the opposite, I fully believe you deserve more and I signed the petition when you first put it up.

But against all rhetoric to the opposite it seems NHS workers are actually better off under a Tory government than they were under the last Labour government - who would have guessed that?

Yeah
the reason we was on our last 3 year pay deal was to just keep us hovering over the minimum wage
they knew it was coming from 2015 and kept us just 10 p to 30p an hour over it
oh aye
who introduced the minimum wage ,if it wasn't for Labour that wouldn't have been introduced

Minimum wage I’m undecided about. It’s a good thing to give a mechanism to allow for a wage that you can live on (the rate at which it is a different conversation) but for those over it it does seem like an excuse for wage suppression - like you say 10-20pence over is nowt, almost insulting like especially given the level of responsibility all grades of staff have in the NHS - ignoring those band 8s and above ;)

More widely with the NHS I’m not a fan of national pay awards. Why shouldn’t trusts have more control over their budgets and what they pay staff? Geography hinders many trusts in terms of their catchment area for staff, Blackpool for example will have half the catchment area for staff than Manchester because fish make shit nurses/porters/etc. So why can’t Blackpool pay a little extra to attract more staff? They can’t make everyone on the ward a band 6 minimum so what else can they do? I get it will create a level of wage inflation in the NHS but I only see it that the staff that lose out under the current system IMHO.

I suppose that’ll teach me for trying and elevate the conversation above the usual “Tory scum” narrative.

Stay safe and happy blue.
my dad is a tory
81 years old
iv just visited him this morning and argued the toss with everything as usual
I'm on the piss as is my norm on my days off back in tomorrow
he was a life long unionist, shop steward, lost money to fight for worse off engineers in his work place
i hate his politics,he hates mine
yet even he wouldn't go near the minimum wage debate

good luck to you too.

More of a ‘Tory stupid’ narrative.

One thing I’ve learnt as a raging pro capitalist is that the Tories have no fucking clue about business or even capitalism.

For capitalism to thrive it needs two basic things. People with money to spend and the confidence to spend it. The Tories penny pinching arseholing shite be it austerity, decent pay, minimum wage or even that a world in chaos is in the long run more expensive to the UK then saving £4billion on the foreign aid bill, is counter-productive. It’s like socialism, but dumber.

The Tories are obsessed with gesture politics, and a good headline in the media. Actual results, benefits to people and businesses, zero interest.

Makes you long for the days of Thatcher who at least did have a bleeding clue about industry and business. Now we are run by an ex-journalist who got sacked for lying.

The stupidity is breathtaking.
