NHS Pay Award, letter to Johnson from my union, please sign if you can

my dad is a tory
81 years old
iv just visited him this morning and argued the toss with everything as usual
I'm on the piss as is my norm on my days off back in tomorrow
he was a life long unionist, shop steward, lost money to fight for worse off engineers in his work place
i hate his politics,he hates mine
yet even he wouldn't go near the minimum wage debate

good luck to you too.

I’d like to spend a Christmas at your house ;)

To be clear I am not opposed to the minimum wage at all - its been a good policy and I was never opposed to it. I just have my suspicions that now for those who were over it are now finding themselves just over it as they haven’t been getting a “fair pay deal” for a while now.

Let me give you an example; in 2010 Tesco was paying its “customer assistants” over a £1 an hour above minimum wage now it’s about 18 pence. And this company is making what £1bn profit a year? And I dare say many of their employees are having their pay topped up by the tax payer. It’s just does not sit right.

More likely due to automation, gig economy and the knock-on casualisation of other sectors than minimum wage.

In 2010, most tills still had a person behind it. Now you don't even need to use self-service as you can use your phone as you pick up items.

Exactly.

There was a time when public sector work meant very 'relaxed' working practices, cushy T&C's, ridiculously generous pensions, but comparatively low pay... these days they've still got the 'relaxed' attitude toward work, the cushy T&C's and generous pensions but their pay is now well in line with, if not higher than, comparable roles in the private sector.
And what planet do you live on exactly.

You are employed by the government who have fuck all money
That is just not true.

The UK has its own Central Bank, it has basically borrowed off itself for the last 18 months to buy up a lot of available labour.

If there was a war tomorrow, do you think we would surrender or find the money to build weapons and fight?

If you had any money would you be borrowing it ?

Would it surprise you if I said i have my doubts about the minimum wage.

It can become a standard wage and a company that could afford to pay a little more than the minimum wage will pay the minimum wage and use the difference to enhance profits.

Then there is the issue of when the minimum rises, people who are paid just above it are dragged into minimum wage.

It is also perfectly legal to work for free (internships) or as a volunteer which is a privilige those on the minimum wage do not have.

I think we share the same concerns mate.

I know what @Fode N The Hole was saying about automated tills and this would have created excess supply of “customer assistants” at Tesco - it maybe the cause of why they now pay barely above minimum wage for these roles.

The question always comes around to

How do we get companies to pay what they can rather than what they can get away with.

No-one seems to have an answer, maybe there simply isn't one.

Change all job titles to include the word 'consultant'. Cos if our mob are anything to go by there's never a shortage of money for consultants. Image consultants, lean consultants, bullshit consultants.
