While I didn't think he was great last season you could definitely see he had the right qualities to become a top centre back which just never saw in Mangala.

Stones
Otamendi
Kompany
Kolarov aka the new Bobby Moore

Really strong set of centre backs that

faultless performance up until he lapsed into his old habit and gave a free kick away near our box by diving in. That was frustrating but other than that he looked the real deal.

Think that "diving in" incident was simply driven by what we were all feeling at that stage of the game....Panic. From a completely comfortable position to being in danger of losing 2 points. Calm and collected until then. Always thought he had it, and showing it so far this season.

Amazing how good defenders look when the players in front of them are putting a shift in.

Maybe I'm just blind but Otamendi performed exactly like last season. Maybe a little less time on his bum this season, but everything else is the same. He made a few mistakes last season that led to goals that gave the illusion that he was shite. He has always been a top notch defender. Last year against the rags he was immense. He's the perfect partner for Stones.

A lot less time on his bum so far.

he has been a rock, always have rated him despite nthe bollox the press write, her is world class and is becoming a mainstay in the team. Nice to see him going to ground a lot less this year, him and Stones have been good together.

Imo he has been much less on his arse & much less dog chasing a balloon, but during the 2nd half on Sunday, the balloon started to appear again & our defence started to look random.

I think Pep will have noted that & also that he was outmuscled & outpaced by West Ham's strikers on occasion when you would expect him to win the duel, rather like Mangala was when his Achilles heel was suddenly shown last season.

I think he is doing ok & has been good in possession but I think he will be phased out if Vinny can maintain fitness & is comfortable with the pass & move game.
