Nicolas Otamendi - 2016/17 performances

I don't think we'll be seeing Vinnie as a nailed on starter again.

Nico and Stones have got this thing down.

I don't think with his recent injuries, Vinny can cope with the intensity that Pep demands. If Vinny does play I have a feeling he will have different and tailor made instructions to Otamendi and Stones.

Wanted Otta gone after last seasons keystone cops defending (old Trafford apart) But he has been very very good in every game so far this season . Playing alongside the outstanding Yorkie pud version of Alan Hansen.

Pep's system is clearly helping the likes of Ota, Kolarov and even Dihno defensively. Ota an Dihno have and will lose a 50-50 tackle from time to time as they did last season, but now there is always help in back of them when they do. The same for Kolarov. I noticed he lost a 1 on 1 on the left, but there was Stones closing in as soon as he did. Pep does think a lot about positioning and defence. All our players look class now because of it.

Otamendi was our best CB last season in most games ...for 89 mins. He'd often be imperious then miss a tackle in a dangerous position or go walkabouts (or be too busy doing his hair)

It was a simple fix but we had to wait for someone other than Pellegrini to do it. Some in the media are saying it shows how good Pep is. Not for me, other examples prove that, for me it shows how half-arsed Pellegrini was.

I also felt Ota was a victim of lazy punditry. Could say similar about Mangala, Pellegrini's love of playing a 4-0-4-2 formation didn't help anyone back there, but he was found out more often imo and his ballplaying was crap
