Nicolas Otamendi - 2016/17 performances

I think from Pep's POV our defense is complete shit and there isn't anything he can do to 'sort it out' so he's fine with Otamendi's hyper aggressive/high variance style. We missed him out there today. If we going to play three at the back vs a deadly counter attacking team you need nico out there to make those wild/hyper aggressive/last ditch effort tackles IMO. Nico gets more stick than Stones and AK but he's easily the most valuable. Call me crazy but I think he's the most important player on
the squad. We've picked up 3 points in
the 5 matches he's missed and we were lucky to get 3 points v sunderland.
Couldn't agree more. If Otto had made a tiny fraction of Stones' defensive errors/sloppiness yesterday, he'd be slated without end on BM. Yes we can always say Stones is still learning but surely at some point we've got to ask ourselves the hard question: are we really signing the right players? We talk about potential and we continue to hope that Stones, Sane, Sterling (to an extent) come good. I know this issue for another thread but at some point, we surely need
to be pragmatic and less sentimental about our buys.

Totally agree. He was sorley missed yesterday and would have at least attemted to thwart their play as opposed to the non tackling Stones and Kolarov.

He would probably have prevented the first goal, but so would John OShea or Shawcross, or Steve Howey, or (whisper it) Mangala.

Doesn't make any of them any good. Just shows how badly the 3 given the job performed.

Really?
That is one name I dread seeing on the team sheet.
Surprised to here that as he is currently the only real defender we have

I just couldn,t believe Ko.larov didn,t take him out before he got in the box(or even attemt to)

Many will laugh at me for what i am about to say...

He's by far Citys best center back at the moment. Most of the criticism comes from his tendency to rush in, this is easily fixed. It requires less work then the other centre backs require. He has a strong tackle and he intercepts the ball better then all the other center backs available. He's very strong in the air, however his tendency to 'rush in' sometimes causes him to get stuck under the ball. What i love about him is he is a warrior. If he stops rushing into situations he would be a solid center back, in my opinion the best in the premier league. If most of you get your wish and he is sold, a team like Chelsea would be foolish not to snap him up.

He's hands down our best defender. much rather him continue to get stuck in than revert to backing off and off until the player on the ball shoots like Stones does

Agree with you mate, would like to see us play with a left back and then judge him

I agree, he is by far the best and i rate him very highly. Of course you don't want him to constantly back off, but he just needs to be a little more smarter. Sometimes holding your position is enough, you don't need to go forward or backwards.

You are spot on.

He's a fucking fairy, not a warrior.

The one thing that really surprises me is, people agree with you. He's part of the problem we have, and has been since he arrived. The fact people clutch at 'he's not as bad as the others' as his praise is enough to tell you he's contributing to our shit.

You can't excuse his 'rushing in' by saying if he didn't do it he would be alright; because he does do it, it's not sometimes (it's very frequent) and he gets it wrong as much as he does right.

He would not be, and isn't, anywhere near one of the best defenders in the league. He doesn't have the brain, he dives instead of defending, he has too many lapses in concentration, he's often rash, his amazing passes are often intercepted (only to be met by "oooo" and "ahhhhh" as it was a defence splitting 30 yard pass attempt), he can't command any players along side him and his positional sense is as bad as Kolarov's.

That's a lot to sort out for a 29 year old footballer who has displayed these traits in our side for well over a year now.

He's a warrior...

I disagree with everything you have sed so I won't comment on it all. Even as he is, in my opinion he's one of the best defenders in the prem right now no question about it, if he adjusts his play slightly or gets his timings better he will be the best, hands down.
