Yeah stats paint a picture, Otamendi gets the ball moving forward and tries to make things happen, whilst Stones is happy to pass in short triangles or back to Bravo instead of taking risks

Care to tell me why Otamendi is "nowhere as good as Stones on the ball"??

Ok since you love stats so much how about Stones completing 5 take ons against spurs, the 5th highest in the PL and he's a CB. You say Stones doesn't get the ball moving and make things happen? Well it wasn't Otamendi dribbling through Spurs midfield like they weren't even there it was Stones. Stones also managed to defend not dive in and be lucky to stay on the pitch.

Passing the ball forward, creating chances and being able to hit long balls does not make a great defender.Stopping opposing strikers does that!!

Otamendi - 6 appearances, 17 tackles(49% success), 25 interceptions, 22 headed duels won(59% success), 34 clearances, 3 blocks

Stones - 7 appearances, 3 tackles(38% success), 13 interceptions, 11 headed duels won(50% success), 33 clearances, 5 blocks

I think it's a major stretch to call Otamendi a "great player". Decent CB yes. On his day, very good (his derby display, particularly 2H for instance). But for a club with our ambitions (to be best in Europe), I think a fairly material question mark as to whether he makes the grade.
I'd say he's one of the top defenders in football right now. Top defending and top ball-playing skills that was untapped before. But that's just me.

You're talking one game though, Stones completed 1 take-on in his other 6 games, he should be playing like he did vs Spurs more often. Currently he gets his head up and if there isn't an easy option he passes back to Bravo, which should be a last resort as it just pushes us back and keeps the pressure on us. I mean it's just my opinion but I think Otamendi has been better than Stones in Peps system.... So far.

Pep wanted Laporte as first choice to partner Stones. I'll back Peps opinion.

Otamendi passes the ball forward 73.3% of the time, Stones passes it forward 62% of the time
Otamendi has created 4 chances from playing the ball out from the back, stones has created none.
Otamendi has a 50% long ball success rate, John Stones has a 33% success rate
Shhhhhhh! Folks have their opinion and the facts don't matter. Didn't you know that he missed a slide tackle yesterday? That's all that matters.

Best defender in the Prem this season. Otamendi. Hands down.

Folks here don't like stats. It gets in the way of their preconceived positions. :)

Perhaps! But that was Pep's opinion before managing the squad. We don't know his opinion now. But if i were to infer, I'd say Pep is backing Otamendi big time over every other CB. So back that!

Right, so Pep didn't know the strengths of our CB's before coming and people call him a perfectionist.....
As for backing him over "every other CB" who you referring to? A crocked Kompany or Mangala who can't even pass a ball sideways.

In 12 months time Otamendi won't even be backup.

He did. But I'm sure he also knows players get better. I reckon he thinks Ota has.

From the way you people are speaking it's like Otamendi cannot miss a single tackle at all or else he's shit.
