not convinced by this guy at all. think we need a CB with better composure in the starting XI alongside Stones. Had Laporte signed I think Otamendi would be back up CB right now.
Maybe. As I think Pep wanted both. But so far this season I'm with DavidD. He has bean our overall best CB.

He is what he is.

A player who can produce top level performances but is generally, not especially good over a typical 90 mins.

A good 4th choice cb who we can probably get away with & still win stuff, if he has to play more often, but not ideal.

A great example today & typical Otamendi, was him running under a throw in, completely misjudging he flight of the ball, & giving away a corner. Then clearing the corner, with a towering header.

That's how he was in Spain & how he is now.
Wrong. We've had 11 games. He's been spectacular in 9. Yet you are more much more convinced by 2 game in which he was good. And 1 in which he was inconsistent ( I.e good for parts of and bad for other parts). That's an interesting way to decide things.

I on the other hand would conclude a player very good in 9 games is in fact very good. To conclude the opposite would suggest the likes of Sergio is shit too. Seeing as he too hasn't been good in 2 of 9 games.

Biggest problem with Otamendi is he goes from one extreme to the other. You cant trust which one is going to turn up from week to week. You hope its the one that looks as good as any defender in the country but far too often the headless chicken one turns up.
This season? 10 of 11 games the same Stellar guy showed up.

Agreed. He has been brilliant barring a couple of games this season. I think Pep will bring the best out of him and genuinely think he will be a mainstay in our defence for a few years

I think you're being kind. Hes had more good performances than bad this season but so has the team as a whole. He was very dodgy in the 1st half against Bournemouth (Our 2nd came from a free kick he conceded doing his usual sliding in 40 yards from goal), he was poor against Celtic and again yesterday. There was also a game early in the season where he was specifically targeted by Pep for sliding in. Hes improved on his performances from last season but infallible he is not.

Won't quote all the posts written after me but I have been reading this forum for 6-7 years and i remember guys here writing that mangala was better than otamendi and better partner for kompany. After this kind of absurd I am not going to argue, but the main indicator is Pep and his decisions. I don't remember otamendi being dropped when he was ready, but stones was, he even was substituted during one of the games when pep wasn't quite delighted with his performance. About otamendi, i don't remember him saying anything bad, even after derby he said that otamendi gave a master class in defence. So, be grateful for our players and support them equally. I don't understand why our one of the best and consistent players for last 2 years is getting such kind of bad comments after all he has done.

Ps diving is part of this game and defender has to have this skill and use it wisely, like he did against bale during madrid game. After all look at fifa ratings, otamendi has 85 point and stones 77, i don't want to say that this is the best source but they have huge number of analysts working on and calculating it, so they know his quality and how good he is. Today otamendi is the best central defender in premier league without a doubt after kompany in terms of skills, but kompany's injury problem is making otamendi the best.

You also have to look at quality of opposition. Of our 11 games, you can really only say three (Spurs, United and I guess Gladbach) are Premier League top half calibre teams (and four of the others are occupying spots 17-20 currently). So in the games that really count, he was bad against Spurs; very good against United; and not much tested against Gladbach. So it's really a mixed bag - as it was last season. Yesterday, he could easily have had a red card - and just lacked the composure and judgment needed in big games like that.

I'm trying hard to convince myself he is good enough but he isn't!

John stones is solid reliable what a centre back should be a very COMMANDING presence but Otamendi is unpredictable makes crazy challenges and gets caught out for me we are still lacking a partner for stones and a LB + RB. The whole defence needs reforming which im confident Pep will sort given the time.

I swear this forum is the most bipolar group of people ever. One minute he's world class, another minute he's always been shit. It is possible for great players to have a bad game. It is also possible for bad players to have a good game. Now I'm convinced it's the former rather than the latter.

Fucking hell, some people need to take a look at themselves. This time last week most people on here could agree that we had an amazing squad, we're the best team in the league and that Otamendi was having a fantastic season. Suddenly, after two bad results, half of us are convinced that he's not good enough. The derby alone proved that he belongs in this squad, and two below par performances have changed so many minds it's ridiculous. Boateng, Pique, even Kompany will all put in bad games but to judge them on their bad days is pointless or there'd be no 'good enough' footballers left. Kolarov has gone through the exact same thing.

Almost nobody was good for us yesterday; I'm willing to cut Otamendi some slack.

I regularly criticise performances but almost never players. That way I'm not left looking like an idiot when they turn things around and save three consecutive penalties to win us a cup.

Now if you'll excuse me I'm off to the Sterling thread. Something tells me he won't be getting slated on there.
