I think it's a major stretch to call Otamendi a "great player". Decent CB yes. On his day, very good (his derby display, particularly 2H for instance). But for a club with our ambitions (to be best in Europe), I think a fairly material question mark as to whether he makes the grade.

Lol, was liking this thread a few weeks ago. I like Otamendi, I think he is good, works hard and is proffessional.

Personally don't think he's much better than Mangala.
Can't believe he's still diving in when it's not called for either. That free kick he gave away at the end of the 1st half was ridiculous.

Well whoever wrote that obviously needs their eyes testing cos he's nowhere near as good on the ball as Stones. And Stones has the added bonus of not needing to dive in for every tackle cos he has some positional sense.

Otamendi has created 4 chances from playing the ball out from the back, stones has created none.
Otamendi has a 50% long ball success rate, John Stones has a 33% success rate

I'm just astonished at your stats. With the naked eye Otamendi doesn't look comfortable at all, whereas Stones looks composed and assured. Certainly looks a far better defender in terms of positioning, perhaps down to him not taking risks. But I'm sure the stats tell the whole story.

Dives in far to often, gets beaten in the air far too often, gets outpaced far too often. Nothing wrong with his effort or commitment but at the top level that isn't enough. If ( and its looking increasingly unlikely) vinny can get over his injury nightmare then he and stones would be the preferred pairing.
