No More Champions League For Me

I can just imagine a conversation between Sheikh Mansour and Khaldoon:

SM: We now have a team strong enough to compete at Champions League level!
K: But your majesty, the Champions League is crap, the pies are too expensive, and all those tourists!
SM: Your right. Lets pull the plug on this whole charade. Sack Pellegrini, get Gary Megson on the phone, meet Barcelona's transfer fee for Aguero, put the squad up for sale, and lets target the Johnstone's Paint Trophy, I want us to be there by 2017 at the latest. 5 years down the line, I want us to be making a challenge for the Unibond First Division.

Very creative that, but what point are you making? Even by exaggeration, what are you trying to say?
How does a few of us saying we don't enjoy watching the European games as much as the domestic comps, for a range of reasons, have anything to do with the Johnstones Paint?
I've not read anyone say we should pull out of the comp, but that's the line those who disagree with the OP seem to be resorting to. As if it's 'oh you don't enjoy it, let's play Macc then'.

How can you not enjoy a game like Tuesday? It was one of the great occasions in the Etihad's history. Superb players playing superb, tactical football. Exciting game in an exciting atmosphere and the thrill of knowing just how good this team now is.

I'd take Tuesday's game a thousand times over an FA Cup tie with Watford or a league game against Stoke. Don't get me wrong, if someone can't afford to go then they've got a legitimate reason for not going. But griping about all the other shite is just silly. If you're a football fan why wouldn't you want to watch your team at the highest level of all?

Jesus, so whining knobs on here. Just stay away so the fans who want to go and watch the best teams in Europe can. You could go and watch the rags if you have Thursday nights free next season.

So having a moan on a forum about the faults of the champions league means needing to go and watch united does it?
Helpful that

I did enjoy it mate, I always enjoy watch us play. But I have to say I honestly enjoyed myself more watching that cup tie with Watford than I did watching the Barca chess match passing. I was more engaged and involved at the fa cup game. In terms of admiring the quality on offer I actually enjoyed Bayern more. And I think there are valid reasons for saying the Prem is a fairer test, and a more satisfying one to win.
The thing is, it's possible to say all this and still want us to be in the competition each season, and do well in it, and if money allows, still go and watch it.

Exactly - how dare you not totally enjoy something you didn't totally enjoy!

The Champs league is great to get into, it's great to pit ourselves against Europes best, it has prestige etc, but is it any better than playing Chelsea or Manure for specatacle and passion?
Wanted to win on Tueday but I certainly wasn't as crushed by the defeat as I would have been against the above.

That's not wanting to not qualify for it, or to want to have Pearce back, or to be in the Unibond etc.

Yes, but the OP didn't say "I didn't totally enjoy the game" did he? He said "I'm never going to a Champions League game again".

Each to his own, that's up to him. But some of us think it's a silly viewpoint.

The "No More Champions League For Me" viewpoint is. The comment wasn't in reference to that remark - just that some don't get as much out of the experience as others.

Lots more Champions League for me. Love it, my City playing Europes best, never thought I would see the day so I'm not missing out on it whilst it lasts. Don't care what agendas there are, as long as City are playing I'll be there. It wasn't long ago I was hoping for a Europa League spot based on Fair Play award so now we deserve to be at the top table I'm not giving up on my beloved blues.
Nobody is giving up on their beloved Blues. And we all know damn well what our recent past was like and frankly right now it means exactly fuck all anyway.

It's the appalling quality of the games that are souped up by UEFA and the media trying to fool everyone into believing the Champions League is the pinnacle of the game when in reality it's a soft arse non-contact game for pansies compared to the domestic game we have (which is still too soft in my opinion).

That's my problem with it. I don't have a problem with City, it's the competition and the way it's played. I've not enjoyed one single game in the Champions League yet. They're infuriatingly stop-start-stop as dive after dive fools the inept officials. It's a woeful product compared to what this sport is supposed to be like.

If you enjoy Wendyball for soft lads well that's fine, well done for not realising that this sport isn't supposed to be like this shit wimps game that every single Champions League game I've attended has left me with the opinion of. But I'm not happy with that, this sport is better than the Champions League would portray it as. I want that to change.

I afraid it's domestic football only for me from now on. I've been increasingly disillusioned with the so called Champions League for some time and my decision is not just a reaction to last night. I will save my money for our Wembley trips from now on.
reasons :-
1. Bent referees
2. Blatantly rigged draws designed to ensure half a dozen big clubs progress

3. Rip off ticket prices
4. FFPR designed to protect half a dozen big clubs
5. No alcohol in grounds.
6. UEFA effectively condoning racist chanting
7. UEFA insisting no domestic games are played on CL nights
8. Season ticket holders being forced out of their seats for press seats and bigger advertising boards
9. Meaningless group games with nothing at stake
10. Obvious bias by high ranking UEFA officials (eg Platini) towards certain clubs and against English clubs in particular City
11. Heavy handed and often thug like policing abroad
12. The Etihad filled with tourists on Champions League nights

I will have all your tickets then thanks, everyone has an opinion and you are no different but most of the points on your list are incorrect at best.
"Most"?

3 4 5 6 7 8 9 11 and 12 are spot on and they aren't the only things wrong with the CL. I've not enjoyed one single CL game yet. I'm finding the competition an overrated joke at the moment, myself.

Agreed, it's a necessary evil to be in it. And we need to progress/win ultimately to enhance brand value (what a thing to have to say), but for me, winning the CL will always pale before the domestic league.

I want it to be what it should be so badly: The best talent in Europe pitting themselves against each other. I think that's why it pisses me off so much that the matches are basically non contact, stop-start affairs. It should be amazing but I generally find the matches frustrating. Tuesday should have been one of the best experiences of my life as a City fan. Obviously, you can never guarantee that any match will live up to expectations but the ref ruined it blowing his whistle for what felt like every time a challenge was made. That's my major issue with the competition. I can live with all the other negative bullshit that surrounds the competition if the football is good but more often than not, fussy referees ruin it.

Points 5 & 12 bit silly.

More to life than a pint!!! and tourists, can't be helped we are a successful club with other people following their players etc.
Not a case if you haven't got a mancunian accent you can't get in!!!!
There entitled to pay for a ticket and watch the blues. I don't have a problem with it.

The problem I have with them is that they are there ahead of life long blues who for whatever reason couldn't get tickets. I know of loads of blues who have been going for 20 years plus and for whatever reason (kids, finances, living away) don't have season tickets any more yet would have loved to attend last night but didn't qualify for tickets.

There were 4 lads on the tram Tuesday night who were over from Saudi, each had paid £200 for their ticket...........and then last night they were off to watch Arsenal v Bayern. They couldn't give a flying f*ck about City. I accept success brings the JCLs but it seems to be at the expense of blues.
