Non-League Football

Maine Road FC are a super club. Started by Blues, ran mostly by Blues, and they play nice football, too.

If City aren't playing (or the ressies and academy if you follow those) then pop down to see Maine Road. A fiver on the gate, can't be bad.

My home town club and first football love, Newport County, promoted to the Blue Square Prem last season after romping the Blue Square South.

They were still in the League when I left Newport, but a dodgy chairman ran them into the ground (fielding half a dozen YTS boys etc) in the hope of selling off the ground for a housing estate. They were thrown out of football when they went bust, and had to reform up in Gloucester (got the nickname of 'The Exiles' then). Had to fight to stay in the Football League pyramid system and not become a(.n.other) Welsh League team. Gradually got a new home ground back in Newport and climbed up the leagues. Would love to see them back in the Football League. It would be the real 'Phoenix from the Ashes' story. Some wonderful memories of F.A. Cup scalps and even getting to the Quarter-Finals of the European Cup-Winners Cup.

Living in North Yorkshire now it's Northallerton Town in the Northern League for me.When City aren't playing it's a great way to spend an afternoon or even better , an evening in the depths of winter , and the pies are great !

As a Committee Member at Maine Road FC can I say a big thank you for this and all the other supportive comments on this thread. I am a seasoncard holder at City and am really pleased that the Europa games mean I, and many of my colleagues at Maine Road, will be able to see most of both teams' games.

Like many have said, if you can get down to Brantingham Road, I'm sure you will enjoy it. I remember canvassing for some support from the Forums in the early part of last season and a group of four lads came down wearing their City colours and, of course it was our worst game of the season when we lost at home to subsequently relegated Ashton Athletic...typical!

Generally though, we've had a very good season and finished 6th in the League. Near the end, we beat second placed and highly financed New Mills 2-0 who had Simon Yeo up front (he who was with the late Keith Alexander's Macclesfield and Lincoln).

We've just put our Review of 2009-10 on www.maineroadfc.com. Have a read of this and have a look at the Photo Galleryand you'll see just how 'City' the club is. It would also be nice if you joined the Forum. We could do with one or two of the Bluemoon's excellent contributors on there.

I also had a semi pro career after leaving Blackburn Rovers at 16, played for Chorley, Glossop North End and Worksop Town.
A good mate of mine played for Chorley a few years ago his name is Mark Schofield, do you know him? His lad Ryan plays for City u15s.

-- Sun Jun 20, 2010 5:54 pm --

Ok I'm an ITK (lol) Skelmersdale United
Does Carl Osman still play for Skem?

I used to know Bernard McConville who looked after the grounds, is he still there, think his business was based in S Bedes next door, Oakmere?

Bernard is still doing an absolutely cracking job for us with the pitch. We rarely have a match off and after the big winter freeze we were one of the first clubs back and playing, so we didn't build up the backlog of fixtures that many other teams did.

The pitch is a credit to him. It would be nice if a City Academy/ Reserve Team came and played a game against us. The pitch would be up to their standard and our young players are footballers, not cloggers.
