Normal Things You Can't Do

I used to work with a guy that couldn't swim. Nice guy. This fact was a bit of a joke between the rest of us in the team. Not in a nasty way, but the source of some piss taking.

After I'd left there and gone to work for myself, I got a call from one of my former colleagues saying he'd drowned in Menorca. He'd been in the sea, waist height, throwing a ball with a few mates, with his wife sat on the beach, and he'd lost his footing, panicked and a current had taken him out and he'd drowned. He was about 38, I reckon.

The funeral, which was in Christchurch, Dorset, was fucking horrendous. One if the pall-bearers was his brother, who I'd never previously met, but I knew straight away it was his sibling - I'll never forget the look on his face when he was carrying the coffin into the church. Truly awful.

People should try to at least learn the basics of swimming.

Why?

I just don't float like other people.
It should be a life skill that everyone should learn. Could save your life one day. It's easy as well.

I've tried lad. For 4 years we had to go to lessons once a week at primary school I just can't float. Did a length of the pool once with arm bands but I didn't get a certificate as that's 'cheating'.

... It's 2014, for fuck's sake.

What's that's got to do with anything??? Do you mean if the year ends in an even number he should be able resist the urge?

I think he is saying that its not that popular these days. Kids are much more into pop music like Bieber and 1D
