I think you highly underestimate how Jong-ill is viewed over there.

not at all, i think you underestimate how opressed people embrace change.
constant blackouts, cant feed your kids, inflation making currency mute, death squads , killings, but you ask one its people and they will say they love their leader............
who wouldnt, cos youd wake up dead !

being patriotic is one thing, being scared to tell how your really thinking is another.

they look with envious eyes to the south ,

its a crying shame. but hey theres no oil to be had, otherwise the country would have been invaded decades ago !

Im sure that is the case for many people and many may leave but many will pick up arms. It'd be Vietnam all over again. The US could not afford to invade NK successfully. The cost both in money and lives would be far too great. And the cost of beating NK - WMD - would be far too great for us all.

Kim was on a little visit to china a couple of weeks ago getting his assurances that they would stay on side when the news of the torpedo attack broke.

The west have known since it happened that the South Korean warship had been taken out by the Norths sub.

Now it's time for cool heads on the security council and while we will publicly be backing the US in their support of SK and China will be supporting NK publicly both nations along with the French will actually be brokering peace.

There was an editorial in the China Post 3 weeks ago about their role on the security council when it comes to dealing with Iran and North Korea, two countries branded axis of evil by the US but both big trade partners with China. Whats good is China sees itself as a peace keeper and a voice of reason on the security council.

If not for China, this would kick off for certain. It would also be a very bloody war, not at all like the rollovers of the middle east. North Koreans on the whole don't look enviously at the south. They fucking love their country and would fanatically defend it to the death. Think of the worst kind of religious fanatics who have been brainwashed from birth for the last 3 generations and are highly disciplined and adequately armed. Thankfully they don't have any usable WMD that we know of, certainly not a nuclear threat that could be deployed far but then again they probably have hundreds of sleeper cells in the south just waiting for the order to go.

Those who argue that we should decommission our nuclear weapons need to think about what this would be like if we were no longer at the top table with the other permanent members. If we didn't have our fucking big stick to rattle.

Superb post GD, so would we along with the US take them out or would we be in for an ass kicking?

Did anyone read that article in FourFourTwo about North Korea's WC team?

It basically implied that the world was waiting to see what mentallist behaviour would commence pre world cup as it serves as a good distraction for any world cup shortfallings (to the NK nation). Apparently the NK's sank a SK ship before the SK/Japan WC as a 'we are still better than you' provocation.....can't remember all the details.......stooopid brain.

Anyway it was a decent read.

Well let's remove little britain from the equation because quite frankly we have very little conventional capability. In a straight fight the US would quite easily defeat North Korea but it would require a lot more fighting than we have seen since Vietnam. The problem would be getting political backing for a full scale war. I think in the end China would not step in militarily because that really could get nasty but they would use their veto in the UN and that could well cause big political problems for years to come. China holds a lot of US$ reserves. Enough that dumping it on the markets along with various trade embargoes they could have a profound effect on the US economy.
"Trade wars" anyone?

It's going to be interesting to see how the China probrem develops. Either Lenin or Fukuyama will be proved right. Unfortunately, neither outcome is good for the planet or its inhabitants.
