North Stand Construction Discussion

I’ve still got concerns about 2 aspects of the design. The blank wall on the end of the left arm as you look at it from Joe Mercer Way.
Certain media types can be stapled to this wall and passing Blues can pelt them with rotten fruit, vegetables, bricks, anvils etc.

We could call it “The Wall of Twats”.

forget about all that shite, I know it's hard to. But imagine from the pitch side, having a full stand behind the goal which became infamous again. Just a wall of noise. Aguero stand sounds wanky to me. The Kippax ticks all the boxes. It has the history, and it tells the world that this is where the noise comes from, where the camera pans to after a goal, the voice of the fans. Not for day trippers or people who have won a competition. The Kippax, where you will hear foul language, where drunk men will let it all out. Somewhere authentic and not contrived, or made up by marketing wankers with no attachment to the club.

You know, there's hundreds of people employed by the club who don't actually support City or even follow football. They've studied marketing at uni, and these are the people who make decisions about the fan experience, and all the stuff that makes you cringe. Light shows and Hugh Ferris.

I was at Old Scaffold, last month, and when they scored that dodgy equaliser, IMO the second goal came from the Stretford end going totally mental. It was like an explosion. As soon as I heard it, I was thinking, "their gonna score here." And they did.

There is nothing like that at the Etihad ATM. No wall of noise, no area where all the nutters are in one place. It's too corporate, too contrived, not edgy or vibrant. Very sanitised. Winning consistently has taken the edge off.

The plans for this new stand seem to appeal to a different sort of clientele. Souvenir shops, a hotel, fast food outlets. It's not really that focused on creating a better atmosphere.
Great post, really hope this is it.

The issue with that is fairly obvious, though. There is a massive residential area between the Etihad campus and town. It's not an overspill area that is connected to town, like the Northern Quarter, you have to pass through this space. And when you do, there's not a lot that rivals being in town. And I'm thinking about the general punters, the students who are not from Manchester etc..

All this aside, I reckon if they built a huge casino. Like the biggest in Europe. A real 24 hour type place, with all the trimmings, like they have in America. It would be totally unique. There would be people from all over the world who would specifically visit or stay for that type of experience, because the ones in town are piss poor. In that sort of venture you could excel. It would also generate a rolling trade that never stops. When you travel around America or Australia, a lot of the big stadiums have casinos. There's a sound reasoning behind this.
Naive and wishful thinking.

There won’t be any supper casino. Been, never happened, gone! Never to return.

The House of Lords last night threw out controversial plans to site a supercasino in Manchester, despite Tessa Jowell's last-ditch attempt to win back support with a package of concessions.

A fatal amendment - passed by three votes - forced the culture secretary's gambling reforms back to the drawing board, rejecting 16 smaller venues as well as the Las Vegas-style casino.

You need to do a bit more research and reading about what has been proposed for the Collar site and wider surrounding Etihad Campus.

There are forum members who have been following the development of the wider Etihad Campus for decades. There are other forum members who have first hand knowledge or an insight of what’s going via connections to the club or to people working on the proposals, that most of us don’t have. At times that information/snippets have been shared on this thread.

Again. Why don’t you go down to the exhibition today or when you’ve got time and speak to the people directly involved in the proposal who know what’s going on and can answer your questions and ‘concerns’.

The city centre is creeping ever closer to the Etihad stadium. In time, maybe not in my lifetime, I’m 55, the city centre residential and office urban sprawl will reach the Etihad.

There are numerous residential proposals planned for plots of land around Ancoats, New Islington, Holt Town, as well as more redevelopments of the remaining mills close(er) to the Etihad Stadium.

One example.

Ancoats Works.

The £50 million project includes canalside apartments, townhouses, gardens and a new café bar or store. The proposed designs, for what’s currently a disused storage depot, include 193 homes, with a mix of 1 and 2‐bed apartments, 3‐bed duplexes and townhouses fronting onto Carruthers Street.

Let’s not forget Manchester Life, who have more residential developments proposed.

Established in 2014, Manchester Life operates as an investor, residential developer, place maker, and landlord across Ancoats and New Islington.

Manchester Life Development Company, the joint venture between the Abu Dhabi United Group and Manchester City Council, coordinates regeneration activities and plans and develops homes.

Manchester Life Management Limited, owned by the Abu Dhabi United Group, owns, and manages our rental buildings.

If you look at Wembley, Murrayfield, and Hydro Glasgow all of them are serviced by major transport hubs. What City are joining here is impressive but you are not going to a concert if it takes three hours to get out of the car park. Mr Edwards Shoe has a point about being a destination, you need to create a district at the Collar site to cater for loads of different people, look at what Wembely has done, I know not everyone's cup of tea but a designer outlet or something along those lines to bring other people to the area making a district.

Someone posted on SSC advising of a train station at the old Mercedes garage that would be perfect as it could service the whole area.

As @blueyorkie advised on his posts Manchester City execs advised they are building multi-storey carparks the perfect spot for them would be the old gas holders, you could copy what they have done at Wembley with their multi-storey car parks, they even have one for coaches as in the Pink Car Park which is a multi-storey for buses

I agree with what @jrb said about the North Stand and the hotel etc, the idea for the new city square is great but it needs to fit in with the surroundings at the moment it looks like a bold on to the stadium

If they were designing something why not something like this that could also be added to the stadium
