If the rumours about £13m are true then Barca are insane. If you assume he is on £150k week at Barca then his "loyalty bonus" is 86 weeks pay, over 1.5 years salary!!

I could understand 6 months salary (£3.6m) so I'm wondering if it is as big a deal as the papers are reporting. I'm sure we could bung in an extra few million if needed but an extra £13m would be taking the piss.

I read that He's on 128k p/w at Barca.

Re: Samuel Eto'o [merged]

This press conference is likely to be more posturing. If his agent says he's staying it's because no deal has been struck over the loyalty bonus. That might change after the press conference at some point so this one could run and run.

Oh and he's not legally entitled to the payment now. Only at the end of next year.

If he signed the two year extension then I assume that it would only be paid at the end of that. But he won't do that as he will be beyond 30 and his market value will plummet.

So he either comes to us for his big payday or he stays for a big payday next year when his contract runs out and gambles that he can still negotiate another mega-deal like the one on offer now.

I think City therefore need to do two things:

1/ Offer to share the loyalty bonus payment with Barca
2/ Publicly state that this is a one time offer from City to Barca for Eto'o. It's now or never.

I know the money is ridiculous but it's not as if we can't afford it!

Re: Samuel Eto'o [merged]

Tick tock 10 minutes to go!

I hope we find out one way or the other and its not just game to up the ante!

Re: Samuel Eto'o [merged]

Spanish papers apparently say that Eto'o has now been offered a new deal at Barca. So this is either Barca trying to prove that Eto'o doesn't want to stay, thus preventing them from paying the loyalty bonus, OR Eto'o genuinely does want to stay and will sign a new deal, OR he will reject both Barca's contract offer and our own offer, see out the 1 year on his contract and move to one of Europe's giants on a free in the summer. Which one is it?

How many things like this have we seen where SSN string us along only to tell us that nothing has actually happened of any importance?!

Is there any link to the press conference?

Re: Samuel Eto'o [merged]

Atleast some of the papers are reporting this correctly, 10 minutes away from hearing he plans to see out his last year.

Looking more likely to be the last

Re: this press conference today

Seems to be the way of these Spanish clubs - release the news that one of their key players has had a massive offer, wait for the protest from the supporters then announce that he's staying. More publicity and more kudos for the President. Jobsa.

As for it being a "damaging blow" or "significant setback" for City, I only have one thing to say: nonsense.

Re: Samuel Eto'o [merged]

According to the "lonesome death of roy carrol" blog laporta has offered eto'o a two year contract extension, probably on the same terms he is currently on. To me it sounds like that's Barca's response to Eto'o's "I don't want to leave" line i.e. they are calling his bluff - if he wants to stay so much, he would sign, which he won't, thus exposing that what he's really after is more cash. Relations between eto'o and barca must be pretty horrendous.

If so, make or break time.
