I suspect he already knew that...

Oh oh. Don't like this quote from Sporting's football director Inácio: "We're not worried about William Carvalho b/c we have alternatives."

"Whoever wants him (William Carvalho) will have to pay good money. His release clause guarantees an excellent deal for Sporting." - Inácio

Unfortunately we can't stop them spending money. As long as they spend over the top and have to pay top wages since they'll all point at shrek and say "I want the same", that's all we can hope for. They're still not going to catch us up anyway.

One to look out for in the future. Wallace the Cruzeiro and Brazil U20's CB has been bought by the portuguese super agent Jorge Mendes for £7m and sent to Braga to make a name for himself. Expect a £20-30m move in a year or two if Mendes's track record is anything to go by

Effect of WC on players' values

Can't open a new thread, but it'd be interesting to discuss which players have seen their value go through the roof, and whose has gone down, as a result of their WC (under)performances? How fair and unbiased is it to judge a player based on e.g. 4-5 games in an unfamiliar formation, in a climate that perfectly suits them (or not) and so on. Take James Rodriguez as a positive example, and, e.g. Costa as negative. Neymar, love him or hate him, is doing great, enjoying the spotlight - some would argue that Messi is smothering him at Barca.

How about City players? Messi for some reason just refuses to pass to Zaba, and did Aguero justify his reputation (injury aside) as one of the world's top strikers? Kompany is doing great so far, do you think it will continue?

Sorry again, not meant to dilute the thread, but this is something I was really curious about ever since the WC started...

Messi generally refuses to pass to anyone unless the fifth defender comes over to the play group (I was actually flabbergasted when he laid it off to Di Maria the other night—I've counted many, many instances of unnecessarily selfish play from him so far). That said, he has delivered and perhaps he feels he has to carry this hitherto lackluster Argentinian team. Agüero had absolutely no service the entire time he was playing and was asked to play an alternating target man / winger role to accommodate Messi. That system would be a horrible way to assess his quality. James Rodriquez has looked a real player for some time (well before the World Cup).
