Offside judgement (Laporte v Wolves)

Worst line I've saw the VAR draw, that's just not where his shoulder is.

Think the rules have to change to any body part being level and then if it's tight under that rule you can give offs
Ya, it's crazy. Leaning should have nothing to do with it.
Where your feet are is your absolute position on the pitch and the easiest to measure.
Every offside shout done in seconds.

These decisions have been given against the goalscorer all season since the change, the rule is a farce but there's no city specific injustice here, accept it and get on with it, we shouldn't be relying on those decisions to win games and ultimately we didn't.

Ridiculous not to give the goal, had we been 3 up the goal would have stood,it’s their way of trying to stop us

They shouldn't be allowed to use the lines at all. They should look with their eyes and if it's not immediately obvious, then the goal should stand. Or they should go with what the linesman decided. It's supposed to be for clear errors, not forensic investigation into every decision.

The issue with your point about going with the linesman’s decision is, the linesmen currently have clear instructions not to flag for offsides unless there is a clear offside and they are 100% sure. They are told to let the play continue, unless there is no question its offside.

Tonight for both the Laporte and Jesus goals, the original onfield decision was offside for both. Whether Laporte is offside or not i think everyone would agree neither of those incidents were “Clearly” offside. Yet for City the linesman flag is straight up. And its happening against us more and more, WBA being yet another example where we were flagged incorrectly offside and a goal wouldnt have stood in a non VAR world.

Without VAR in play we dont score any of those 3 goals. Instead, with VAR assistance at least 2 stood. For those Blues wanting rid, be careful what you wish for. IMO the decisions we’d get without it would be much worse!

no - that's nowhere near where the new rule states offside begins. It's at the shirt sleeve or upper arm, not the shoulder. Rules. Offside by the rules. Get over it
It's all subjective anyway. Some players wear long sleeves. How do they decide in their cases? They just randomly decide a place where the upper arm starts.

I don't think Laporte's goal should have been cancelled, but it doesn't matter in the final reckoning, today at least. It would have mattered if the game finished 1-1 though.

In black and white decisions like that, there should be consistency. All too often, the authorities favour the underdogs (or the favoured team for that particular season). Being generous, this could be attributed to natural bias.

Exactly so it’s more to the point that the rules are stupid cause you can’t score with your upper arm they’d take the goal away.

I’m still wondering where the same scrutiny was given when Salah scored against us last season!
Too right - think we got a two second replay from the worst camera angle and then the quickest restart on record.

And then Klopp has the temerity to complain about decisions this season. Shameless.

the rules state it was offside.
it was offside.
If the rules are wrong, that's a bigger debate.

As soon as the lino flags - it becomes a case of clear and obvious error. That wasn't a clear and obvious error.
Thanks I’ve learned something tonight.

If VAR is only to over turn clear and obvious errors I’m not sure why they need to draw the lines and all that but there you go. Once the Lino has put their flag up you could just take a quick glance and say “tight that, can see why the Lino called it offside. No goal”

To be honest I dont think the premier league’s VAR protocol is particularly clear

Clear and obvious not an issue for offsides. We are told they are black and white decisions. Binary. Off or on
Well yeah, that was some bullshit they came up with afterwards even though they don't have the technology to back it up. But VAR was first sold to us as a way of eliminating glaring errors.

Look at the ball! The picture is a split second after Bernardo makes initial contact as the ball is behind the top of his head

it’s a fuckin joke. There’s so many factors involved in decisions like this that are complete guesswork

This is an argument I can get behind. Until they’re running “offside cameras” at much higher frame rates and showing us the frame before and after (like cricket) then they need to allow a much bigger margin of error.

Holland already does with an “umpires call” type of solution.

But both linos gave them offside today and at least var gave us one back. Without it we score one less.

Its still fucking guesswork tbf.

So if I read the rules right, if we switch to those Cameroon world cup shirts without any sleeves, we can be half a foot further forwards without being offside? We're missing a trick here

The purple line is half way dow his arm
Is it not also leaning to left a bit too or is it just a trick of the eye? Well BT weren't wrong when they said other teams have had those, I just get the feeling they wouldn't have bothered chalking it off if we'd already have been 2-0 up. Who would have complained if that was ruled onside in all seriousness?
