Old Maine Road photos thread

Why? There were no numbered seats. Only the Main Stand had numbered seats at that stage.

I can’t see the point. Maine Road had a 63,000 capacity and the biggest attendance I can recall before promotion was for Huddersfield on New Years Day 1966 when 47,171 were there.

The first match I can ever recall buying a ticket for was the Everton Cup match in 1966. I remember them being sold in the turnstiles at Maine Road on a Sunday morning. After promotion, even the United matches were pay at the gate. I also bought tickets for the replay at Goodison Park and the second replay at Wolverhampton.

I was at all those cup games and iirc I have the programme for the game at Wolverhampton somewhere which is a one page team sheet.

You know they'd have scraped the lines, given them an orange ball and played on this pitch in the 70s!
Absolutely magical image. If you went to a game in these conditions, you can sense the atmosphere just from this pic.
The one I remember must vividly was the game v qpr around Feb 78 when Colin Bell scored. Frozen snowy pitch but the game went ahead ! Great days.

That particular picture actually does take me back to one of my favourite memories, and, my first ever match at Maine Road as a kid.

Not because of the scintillating football, but because the floor of that tunnel had iced over, and I spent the second half skidding up and down it :-).

That was my first ever game!
I was 8-years-old and I'd waited to go to a game. I knew what it looked it looked like in my head before I got there and then I turned up and the pitch was white and the ball, orange!

I would love to go back in time just once to go through the Kippax with my phone I know that's impossible so I will just need to savour the memory, feelings and experiences I had.

Dont remember the tunnel in the corner between Kippax and North stand, anyone know when was that removed?
Im too young to remember, but when the north stand roof went on, it divided the north stand from the Kippax and the north stand ended in a straight line down the sideline, so presume then!!

Maine Road was pretty symmetrical at one poiny (tunnels in each corner i think) before it became a patchwork quilt in later years…
