Your original post spot on imho and experience.
Tribute bands are less expensive to get tickets for, play in smaller venues, much better deal.
I always said if one of my fav bands Genesis reformed with Gabriel singing that he just wouldnt be able to sing the tunes properly - they are plenty of G tribute bands (Musical Box etc) who perform them much better.
It is most noticeable when it comes to the singer; saw 70 yr old Richie Blackmore recently - he cant solo like he did, but the quality of the tunes was so good, and he had a new singer in, so it was much like watching a Purple/Rainbow tribute band anyway.

Seeing Rod Stewart couple weeks in Vegas, 72 and his still going strong!
Hope he's still alive, don't want to be seeing 'Ron Stewart' instead

Couldn't agree more mate, I love rock music and love the Stones, The Who, and many more great rock bands, but
now, for me, they're totally shit. Jagger and Co are fucking ridiculous and resemble Achmed the dead terrorist,
Pete Townsend looks like my grandad just before he died.
Rock music needs to be performed by young blokes (or girls), when they're at their vocal peak, I think they're just
so up themselves with ego they just can't jack it in, and as you say, baby boomers, of which I'm one, should
pack away the nostalgia, and watch them at their best on Youtube.

I only partially agree. In the last 2/3 years, the more senior bands I have seen:

Peter Gabriel - slick production, still great voice but lacked energy for me
The Who - well half the who! Townsend, still a monster guitarist, Daltrey hmmmm. Voice and energy levels sadly lacking
Anderson, Rabin and Wakeman, of the five or six times I have seen Yes, by far the poorest concert. John's voice still just about ok but again, band lacked dynamism and energy. If Wakeman moved next door, you would definitely move out.
Steve Hackett - Just brilliant at every level. Think the guy is hitting 70 and he just keeps getting better. Not like his band were young things either.

The Oz Pink Floyd - seen them a couple of times and enjoyed their concerts better than the originals.
So I see where you are coming from. In the main, the old guys maintain their musical dexterity and genius but they definitely lose the dynamism, edge, energy of performance with the noticeable exception of Mr Hackett. Kind of glad that Led Zeppelin will never reform as would rather remember them as they were in their pomp.

I was never a Floyd fan, apart from early Syd Barrett Pink Floyd, but my mate has always loved them.
He's seen the originals in their pomp, and went to see the Aussie Floyd and said they were just as good
musically, and he can't wait to see them again.

Yep, although they are charging ticket prices akin to the real Floyd these days
