Still not a LB. Got the absolute run around from King and Francis today. Zero surprise the Bournemouth goal came from his side and he simply has to do better, a real fullback just doesn't give Francis all the time in the world to weigh up and deliver a cross. His poor positioning and slow reaction is why we concede that goal.

As soon as Delph replaced him, Bournemouth were done as an attacking force.

Nice pass for the first goal though.

Very assured performance. A leftback he surely is. Won everything in the air against bigger forwards . His positioning and attention was spot on. The way he demanded the ball too suggests a growing confidence.

When Pep watches the tape the obvious will jump out. The guy stays attentive to his defensive duty and the defensive line. Almost never gets caught keeping players onside.

All the other 3 did at different times. Albeit it was missed by the refs on 2 of those occasions. Someone on the game thread compared him to Joshua Kimmich. He is on to something :)

Definitely some disparate views of his performance and play.

I wonder what it would be like to give both him and Delph a game on the left at the same time. They could cover for each other and it would be nice to see Zinchenko in the LM role for a change. Pre season I thought he looked decent in the DM role, and he definitely has a pass in him, but since then he has been “relegated” to the sub LB position, especially when we play with the inverted FBs in a 2-3-2-3 going forward.

You might as well disregard everything Dax ever writes about Zinchenko he completely and utterly lost any sense of objectivity months ago. If you only listened to Dax, Zinchenko would appear to be the lovechild of Maldini and Roberto Carlos.

You really only need to look at a replay of the goal to see his positioning wasn't "spot on", he's far too narrow, by about 5 yards, and then reacts like sloth to the ball going out to Francis.

He went on and on and on a while ago about how Zinchenko would be a world class leftback haha

Also gave that Lyon attacker too much space allowing him to all the time to score that goal on Tuesday. He’s not a leftback and if Delph doesn’t play I would prefer to see Danilo there.

Watch again, he narrowed on purpose to cut out the through ball lane. Letting Francis have it at the top of the key in front of our defense was the right decision

Just because a goal results, doesn't mean the last player near the crosser committed an error. It will be the equivalent of claiming Ederson was positioned incorrectly after they scored.

"He narrowed on purpose to cut out the through ball lane."

There was absolutely no one there to get on the end of a through ball. We had 2 defenders already marking the 1 forward, Francis was obviously going to get the ball as the only free player.

He moves inside and drops back because he knows he can't defend for shit out wide and is scared of Francis taking him on.

As a result a completely safe passage of play turns into a goal conceded.

He is our third choice LB and with any luck we'll never see him play an important game against a top side there, because it's a gaping hole in our defence.

Don’t worry, it was patently clear that his comments were silly. However, I will have to disagree with your comments about the goal. Francis asked for the ball over the top, Zinchenko stepped back to make sure he wasn’t done in behind, which is his primary job there. Once Francis got the ball, however, I do think his primary task immediately changes to stopping him getting in a cross, which is the ONLY mistake he made in that passage of play, IMHO.

Watching with the view of an amateur. Watch that goal again. The error was Fernandihno's who from the restart lost his man Fekir and never once looked around to find him until the cross came in.

Fekirs attempt to control the cross was what froze Zinchencko. Had Dihno paid attention to the dangers around, he'd have picked up Fekir.

Zee latched on to Corbett the moment the restart occurred and stayed with him until he was stuck btw 2 players. But hey believe what you will.

Read Chicago's response.

Zinchenko is a good squad player and he didnt let anyone down today against Bournemouth , he played some superb forward balls and Leroy's work ethic bailed him out a few times , everyone can see Zinchenko isnt a natural left back but he does his best for the team and you cant ask anymore than that. People giving him shit because he is willing to make the sacrifice and play out of position to cover injuries is out of order , give the lad a break.

So you agree with the facts of my claim but think I was being silly. Ok

As for the bolded, agreed. But failure to stop a cross from a central position isn't a mistake. He went out towards Francis but the cross got past him. Shit happens.

Just like Ederson was correctly positioned, put in a good dive, but couldn't keep the ball out. This doesn't mean Ederson made a mistake, does it?

Oh Jesus Christ.

No one has given him shit, we're just assessing his performance. We all know he's trying his best and out of position, but that effort and good intention doesn't actually stop his mistakes being mistakes, and they are worth talking about when we're probably 1 injury to Fernandinho away from him playing LB all season.

Delph or you mean :) As an injury to Dihno might have him playing DM.

1 injury to Fernandinho moves Delph to midfield and makes Zinchenko our only LB.

It's pretty clear that's what Pep thinks given the amount of times Delph has been played in midfield this season.

Thought he was very average today, but so were a few more.

Which is pretty crazy isn't it?

It's like playing Jorginho at LB and being upset that his defending isn't good enough but his passing is clearly a level above.

Delph can definitely play DM, but if you have Delph and Zinchenko it's crazy not to play Delph LB and Zin DM.
