Omar Abdulrahman (Amoory)

Differing opinions on the lad, mostly believing he has enough about him to make an impression here.

I guess if his fee was reasonable, the gamble,or opportunity,of having the UAE superstar on our books is one we should be seriously considering.

Apparently he's on good money atm, which might be a problem if we were looking at sending him to a salary capped league like MLS.

I would imagine now the UAE are in the semi finals of the Asian Cup and therefore now one of the top 4 sides in Asia, their FIFA ranking should fall below the 70 mark allowing him to get a permit.

I can see us and a lot of clubs going after him in the summer.

There is one very good reason we should try foer him.

Style of play[edit]
Omar plays as a left-footed winger, attacking midfielder and his known for his fantastic passing accuracy, dribbling and his ability to set up goals. He has excellent ball control, balance and skill. Despite his weak physique, Omar is capable of beating defenders in one-on-one situations. Omar also a set pieces can take corners, penalties and is a free kicks specialist.

How often are the FIFA rankings updated? If the UAE makes it to the Top 70, is it also possible they might fall out before any offers are made and work permits are applied for?

IIRC they update it most months when international games happen, but if there's a major tournament on they'll tend to delay updating it to wait for the end. They'll probably produce an updated list a week or two after the Asian Cup finishes.

The work permit rules require a country to have an average ranking below 70 over the last two years. So it isn't enough to simply jump into the top 70, just before the player signs. So he would still have to go through the appeals process for players who don't automatically qualify. However, I suspect he would still get one on appeal, this time, if UAE go all the way to the final of the Asia Cup and particularly if he is ranked as the tournament's star player.

It really does seem a stupid pointless rule, though . What's the thinkin behind it ?.

The thinking behind it is just that they have to set a rule somewhere to avoid the government being accused of showing preference to rich football clubs over regular businesses who might want to employ people from outside the EU. It's the government that sets the rules and they set them after consulting and agreeing the system with the football authorities. If they had no criteria, they would have to fill up the courts with work-permit appeals for every non-European footballer who wants to play in the UK or allow every one in, regardless of their ability. By doing it this way, they only have to do appeals for those who either don't have many international caps or who play for a lowly ranked nation. Then they decide based on whether the player can be ranked as an "exceptional talent", worthy of allowing in, despite not meeting the criteria. There are apparently alternatives being discussed, such as basing it on the size of transfer fee, as mentioned earlier in this thread, but I doubt any government would agree to that, especially one that is so anti-immigration as the current UK government.
