I've been taking note of the list .. I don't do horror but I love crime and thriller so there's a few I'm going to pick up on ..

If you like crime books, you might like one with a twist. It's a mixture of two genres, crime and fantasy fiction. I think there is a whole series of them.
Hawk and Fisher by Simon R Green.

it's a real shame when they dump books. I used to work for Macmillans and they were part of a thing called the net book agreement which meant that unsold books had to be pulped. madness.

what I do is trawl my local charity shops wherever I am and then when I have finished with them I give them back. only costs about 90p per book and they get used again. It would be a good thing if more people did this

My dad is a BIG book reader. First books I ever got into (when I was 6) was the Secret Seven, Bobbsy Twins and Famous Five. (Still have the originals boxed up in the loft). Then I read The Hobbitt (age 8), which I couldn't put down, then Lord Of The Rings. As I ghot older I got into Crime and Thrillers.

So Glenda, do you read Martina Cole and Mandasue Heller (or whatever her name is) books?

Think I've read most of Martina Cole. My favourite is John Grisham ... and read all Patricia Cornwell and Jonathan Kellerman ... Looking for a new one actually !

We've got a crime writer coming into one of our branches in a couple of weeks. I've been organising the publicity for it. His name's Peter James and apparently is fairly well known among crime lit fans. His latest got decent write-ups in the Times and Express, so he might be worth a look.

Good crime authors: Peter Robinson, PD James, Elisabeth George, Minette Walters, Stieg Larsson
Good "spy" authors: Colin Forbes, Robert Ludlum, Tom Clancy
Good Fantasy authors: David Eddings, Katherine Kerr, Tery Goodkind, Terry Brooks, Christopher Paolini, Maggie Furey, JV Jones, Raymond Feist, Robin Hood, David Gemmel, Stephen Donaldson

Good authors otherwise: Paulo Cuelho, Diana Gabaldon, Peter Mayle. Desmond Bagley, Hemingway, Jack Keruac and a ton of others...

The ragged trousered philosophist is the best book ever. Although it does turn you into a raving socialist.

I agree stony there are literally thousands of bad ones... but the ones that are good are awesome...

Raymond Feist Magician is a good one... riftwar saga is excellent... But i would start with the other end of that saga... the triology he wrote with Janny Wurtz starting with daughter of the empire followed by servant of the empire and finished with mistress of the empire... then go over to read magician and riftwar saga...

You know not what you say...

I spent a couple of weeks totally absorbed in those books last year. I actually felt a tad bereft once I'd finished them.

This!

I read very little, but I loved those books.
