One for the book worms....

The City & The Stars by Arthur C. Clarke is a great book, depending on your Sci-Fi limit.

Good book indeed. On the subject of Sci-Fi, anyone here bothered with Robert A Heinlein?

Another vote for 'To Kill a Mockingbird'. Also, read Catch-22, it's bloody brilliant.

BUMP!

What was your favourite animal character from a book, or book chiefly featuring animal protagonists and why?

Obviously, the vast majority of animals in books are anthropomorphosed, as the traditional novel form dictates, but you get the idea. Watership Down was pretty hard to beat.

I've always wanted to write a novel in which the main protagonist was non-human, and wondered which books which like this everyone thought worked or failed. I'm also keen to find new authors who do this well.

The only books I have read are 'Animal Farm' and 'Alice in Wonderland' but that was some years ago. I remember watching the film watership down as a kid as well, scary!

When I was studying 'Alice in Wonderland' at college, I remember one of the biggest discussions being about the author (CS Carol?) and his like for young girls!

I have thought about writing myself and one of my idea's had a cat as the main charactor but iv never gone further than just writing my idea's down!

The odd thing with Watership Down is that you are always being reminded that the rabbits are rabbits, and not humans.

As for books of this type that you might not have read, have a look at 'Time Stops For No Mouse' by Michael Hoeye. It's slightly too precious, and has the feel of something that has been designed to sell, but still, there are worse.

Berger, the best place to start is with the names, with the name of your fictional cat. If that is in place, and it fits, the stories will seem easier to write.
