Professor Juan Cole is one of the most informed writers on the Middle East and the Muslim world in general, he is very liberal in his opinions and opposed the Iraq war and the Bush administrations policies in the middle east (he has lived there and speaks most of the languages of the Middle East and South Asian) he wrote a brilliant book which I think those who are interested should read called Engaging the Muslim World

Juan Cole is nowhere near a liberal. You should also add to that list that he's an advisor to the Bush Administration, the CIA, Blair's Government and supported the Afghan war.

On the moring it was announced he had been killed i was watching the news, it was either Sky or the BBC and they put up a picture that they claimed was of Bin Laden after he had been shot, there was a clear injury to his left eye and he wsa covered in blood.

Did anyone else see this?

i can't understand what is going on now about releasing photo's if this has already happened.

It's actually kind of funny what a comedy villain Bin Laden had become and what a non event his killing really is. I suppose Obama's pleased at it's sure to boost his popularity rating, if only for a minute. But beyond that, other than a few "that's great!" posts on here and a few comedy youtube videos of Americans chanting "USA" whilst firing their handguns in the air - I don't actually know anyone who gives a shit one way or the other...I think that in itself speaks volumes.

Whilst I agree with your words about lies, Bin Laden would really NOT have been worth more alive.

He would have had a stage (in any court case) whereupon he could have spouted more of his vile words, poisoning the minds of many thousands more gullible muslims. One clip I saw mentioned hostage-taking, this would undoubtedly have increased, with the release of OBL being their main aim, and we all know that would nbever have been allowed.

You really think he would have talked and spilled info about his cohorts whilst in custody? Never in a million years.

Had he been charged and gone to court over his actions, he would have been given the death penalty, making him the martyr that he always wanted to be.
This way, I don't think he has.

He's worth plenty alive if the rest of the World thinks he's dead...

Other than that - you may well disagree with what I'm saying - which is fair enough. I guess I was just talking about my own experience which is that his death has been nothing but the catalyst for a bunch of sometimes funny jokes (Lob Da Man in Sea made me chuckle)...no-one really cares or is getting particularly uptight or celebratory about it.

I went to the pub last night and saw a number of people I hadn't seen for a while. Every single one of them brought it up. Only in passing, but the absence of blood/bunting on the streets is not necessarily a barometer of people's total apathy.
