Right, so far we've had:

The fan base is too old
Too many women
Too many children
Not enough young lads
Shit pre match entertainment
All seater stadium
The wrong songs
The wrong transfers
The wrong style of football
Stadium accoustics
Stadium layout
Sanatised stadium
The wrong opponents
Singing sections split in two
The wrong kick off time
The location of away fans
City Square
The roof's too high
Tickets too expensive
Too many whingers
Not enough working class fans
Too many middle class fans

Many of the above have existed for the last hundred years, at every stadium in England. The simple fact is that previously you probably weren't aware because like minded people would gravitate to each other.

One poster can't understand why fans will sing in the concourse or in the pub but not at the match. Simple, It's because they're with like minded people when they're doing it and if you want to join in you move towards them, if you don't like it you can move away. You can't do that in a modern all seater, all ticket stadium.

Think back to Maine Road. When your dad, or mum, first took you then you probably went in the Platt Lane or the North Stand and sat down. Then, when you were able to go on your own with your mates you went on the Kippax. Once you were a bit older and liked a sing song then you went in the corner of the kippax. Here you would find other people that liked the same things, singing, jumping up and down, abusing the away fans, etc. Then when a bit older, if you stlll wanted to sing, you gradually moved towards the North Stand. If that wasn't your thing and you could afford it, then you could sit in the Main Stand.

The point is, you had a choice.

Now we don't. You cant just turn up and decide where to go, or who to go with. You're stuck with the people who sit next to you, or near you. I know there are nominal family stands and singing sections but the vast majority of fans are mixed up and it's no wonder the atmosphere is flat. The "sit down" brigade are behind the "stand up" mob. Chidren are next to pissed up lads. Mates are split up.

One way to get the atmosphere better and get people in the ground early would be to introduce areas of the ground that have tickets but no seat numbers, The entire SS lower for instance. That would make people get in earlier to get the popular seats and allow mates to sit together where they can sing and swear, abuse the away fans, whatever, without feeling inhibited by sitting next to people they don't know. It would be a logistical nightmare, the club and police would hate it, but it would work. Getting like minded people together is the only way to produce a improved atmosphere.

Another way would be for the club to introduce a mass relocation exercise, which they are highly unlikely to do. Why should they? The stadium is full every week, it's piss easy to police and steward.

However, The club DO have an opportuniy to address the problem when the expansion takes place. We will then have an area of the ground that has no historical culture. But will City do what is necessary?

When I first went with my dad as a child I sat in the Kippax. Your entire post is therefore invalid.

So are we gonna give it a choice (I sat in the North - Helen made me, I Owe it to that lady) I did sit with Helen on yjr 87/92 period!

Sadly its much easier to criticise with a keyboard.
There is 80 people who will whinge but never do anything.
There are 20 of us out there however who will turn up early at the stadium, try to get the surfer flag out, stand in the ground and sing for most of the match.
Sadly the 20 are scattered all over the stadium.

What DOES work just gets criticism.
What many Blues have proposed does work, evidently it has for other clubs.

We need to start small however and work our way up.
What The Citizens proposed was for likeminded people to come together and sing for 90min, no matter what.
But with practice, we get singing from the same hymn sheet.

We need a Drum. It keeps the rhythm going, keeps everyone in rhythm and not rushing out songs.
We also need a Tannoy.
A Capo or Capos would use the Tannoy to organise the crowd and get them singing.

This does work.

However the older generation hate this. Have misconceptions about the drum and are quick to throw criticism... last to sing.

These ideas need to start small. I propose all likeminded blues who want to improve atmosphere do so at EDS games.
Cheap entry... loads of space and we can stand wherever.

We do however need people to step up and be the Drummer, be the Capo and so on.

I'm already helping out with some stuff.

Want good atmosphere in the Eastlands?
We need to develop it at The EDS.... just like the players do.

You only have to look at Crystal Palace, they've a group of lads in one corner (around 500). They make more noise alone than both our SS and block 109-111 do put together.

Not just that, what they do also revs the rest of the ground up.

No one hardly mentions it, if it was in Germany then they'd get arselicked.

It's amazing what they're doing at Palace, that would be the only way we'd improve our atmosphere to get something like that. But we're talking a huge amount of people gathered together in one section. Not split either side of the away fans, you need a bunch who'll commit to being like that all the time and not just let the novelty wear off after 5-6 games.

Yes, maybe the away fans being close does help the atmosphere and the chants to one another does improve things. But it's bad if we need away fans present to help us create OUR own atmosphere.

^This. We should all give it a try at the next EDS game or maybe even at the league cup match against wigan, we could all get a section together?:-)

It will only work if people come together in my view.
Blues calling other blues M*nichs and groups turning up with no intention of joining in with other groups ain't gonna work.

People who are involved in whatever ways already need to get on board and Blues need to show that they want to do the Capo role and do the Drummer role etc....

Start it small. Hopefully likeminded people who like the Ultras movement will come on board.
Maybe one day it will appear at a first team match :-)

Who's stepping up though? Hundreds of posters with an opinion on how shit the atmosphere has been past few seasons... if similar numbers really wanted to improve the Atmosphere we would see big improvements.

Ps. Atmosphere doesn't mean stood there pissed up singing about the Swamp dwellers for 90min

We're all to blame I'm in 117 half way down and don't always put as much in as I could. However, 'match day experience' has a lot to answer for..... Don't do this, don't do that, no swearing, no Standing, even don't walk out the way you used to as ' we' have decided to cause chaos near the gas holders after 10 years.... The list goes on and on.
