I see, deforestation for profit!Back in around 1900, my great grandfather was a farm labourer with a growing family.
He wanted to buy a farm, but couldn't get a mortgage, however he did manage to get support from a wealthy gentleman to make the purchase.
After buying the farm, he then went about selling off a lot of timber on the property to pay off his loan and very soon became a debt free farmer.
People don’t generally realise that deforestation created the moors in Britain. Those magnificent walks are a human creation. There was an attempt to reforest that moor just north of the A66. Not sure how it turned out. Norwegian spruce isn’t really forest, just plantation for profit. Harder wood needed for real British forest: oak, elm, ash, beech etc.I see, deforestation for profit!
;-)
The wood went mainly to make charcoal for the industrial revolution and before that, the Navy.People don’t generally realise that deforestation created the moors in Britain. Those magnificent walks are a human creation.
And before that: for building, fuel and cultivation. Deforestation was started by the Neolithic tribes about 5,000 years ago.The wood went mainly to make charcoal for the industrial revolution and before that, the Navy.
