Pablo Maffeo

I am puzzled by this. I thought that Maffeo was our brightest talent at full back. Why the hell are we shipping him out to New York when it is such a problem position for us. Surely this season we have ample opportunity to start to give him game time and integrate him into the first team squad properly?

Makes no sense - RB is one of the few areas where NYCFC have a good player in Iraola

I was convinced he was going to get a run out around September / October time when he was the only fit full back after Sagna / Kolarov however he never got on then and we have players coming back now. It make sense to get him some senior football. I think we will see Denayer in the squad next year so Maffeo could play the whole MLS season and it would be unlikely he would have missed anything with us other than EDS and being on the bench occasionally. Having watched Angelino do the same thing it is clear that there is a sizable step up from EDS to MLS. Angelino looked a good prospect but loads to work on defensively. We are far better for finding that out over a season in the MLS than by giving them minutes here and there in our first team (NYCFC supporters will not appreciate that comment).

Iraola is a decent player for them, I don’t know how it will work but there is plenty of room in that squad for decent players. I wouldn’t be surprised to see barker go as well.

I rate him higher than all our EDS players.

Why not loan him to the Championship to gain some experience instead of NYFC !

Ditto. Absolute cut above most of our prospects. Physically and mentally ready. He's just a proper leader and an excellent player - a natural defender too unlike most FBs these days. Iraolo has been absolute shite for NYCFC, so they do need a RB, but i do think Maffeo should be at City. He's too good not to be used imo.

If a new manager was arriving in the summer, it would surely make sense to let him make his own judgement on one of our most promising youth players, in a position where the current options have an average age of 32

Well the club appear to have made a right town halls of Barkers loan so id hope they may have learnt a lesson regards choice of destination........NYCFC? Id say not.

Its hard not to get angry and frustrated with the way we're handling our youngsters.

Good move if true, Paddy knows a lot about our mini Zab and will play the right style of football.

I think this might be the best short term move. Of the dozens at the Academy, it's often overlooked that one, if any, are gonna come into the first team. I think Maffeo could be that one. I hope Paddy does his stuff and sends us make an even more improved player.

I am not sure that our youngsters will benefit from loan in the US, I would rather loan them to France, Spain or Championship.

I'm not fully convinced playing in the MLS is sufficient experience to develop as a player that will eventually be capable to challenge our first team. The benefit now though is that Vieira is there who did an excellent job previously and will know most of the lads we send over.

I've read great things about Maffeo, small in stature but tough and doesn't shy away from a physical battle similar to Zabaleta.

Add me to the list of people who are skeptical about loaning players to NYCFC, while it might be good to have them playing 90 minutes week in week out I don't like the idea of what has gone on with Angelino where by he has basically had a 15 month long season with a couple of months off and is now back in training with us, seems like we are putting the lads under a lot of physical strain at a young age where they could be burnt out very quickly. Would rather see them over here in Europe, where we can keep a closer eye on them and playing to a similar schedule.

What? We own the bloody club! how close an eye do you wanna keep on him?

I'm very pro NYCFC, a lot of the spanish leagues best players including our own Silva cut their teeth in the cesspool that is the spainish second division but where it shines is in the coaching and the ability to teach these young players how to play, the opposition doesn't need to be particiularly special to develop a kid, in fact if we look at the pool of foreign talent compared to english I'd argue it can be a hinderance sending them to the likes of the championship nowadays. The right opposition to develop isn't the hardest, it's the one which allows you the most opportunity to grow.

At NYCFC we have the best coaches, cos we pick them, the right footballing style, cos we pick it, and we have a manager who knows the kid personally and has a vested interest in developing him, cos we picked the bastard. What does a inevitable loan to a dire shithole like Rotherham really have over that?

No Championship side is going to take Maffeo because of his lack of physicality, especially as a defender.

The lower leagues in general is so hard to to get right when it comes to loans.

I actually think NYCFC as an option for a first loan move for our youngsters is perfect because i think we will pretty much know they will get game time if they get picked to go.

With Vieira there as well he will know how to get the best out of him as I think as a small defender he could only get away with playing as a right back or a central defender in a back 3, in a back 2 he would get targeted.

I am very interested to see how Maffeo develops over the coming years because technically he is very good and in the tackle he is Zaba like, physically and maybe even height wise how he will adapt when playing men is going to be interesting.
