Pau Torres

@Blue tiger was right that he's terrible in the air, that's a really glaring weakness in his game.

Other than that I would say he's got a lot of potential but isn't the finished article yet and that's probably why no one has taken him yet at €60m. His speed is a major asset, he's pretty big, so he's very useful in a high line.

I think all his issues really come down to one thing - being a bit passive in defence. That's why he's bad in the air and I've definitely seen a few problems caused by him preferring to drop off rather than go and make a tackle.

On the ball he's amazing, He's got the creative long passing we don't have at CB (except Laporte trying to hit that diagonoal 10x a match) and if no one is marking him, he'll just take the ball 40 yards up the pitch until a defender has to come and deal with him and leave someone else unmarked.

I would not be surprised if our coaching staff looked at him and thought that because we're talking about a 4th good CB, they could take a few months to a season polishing him whereas other CL contending clubs think he's not quite ready to go in as the #1 CB.

My approach to transfers these days is that Pep and the club very rarely make mistakes. With the release clause this one has always seemed like a City transfer, and he's definitely got enough positives about him to see why we might be interested.

Thanks for that.
I had only seen him play against the rags when I didn't think he did too well.

Those United games were a bit odd for the whole Villarreal side, they should have been 3/4-0 up at half time in each match and just refused to score and it became a very open game.

I thought he was v. good against Bayern Munich in the CL. When Villarreal had their backs against the wall he was a beast, and he started all their counterattacking moves.

I think people need to remember he'd be replacing Aké. He's not replacing Dias or Stones or Laporte. Aké started 14 league matches at CB in 2 years. I don't think Torres is the perfect CB, and my preferred option would be to let Mbete take over those few games, but he's more than good enough to replace Aké, I think he's an improvement on him in almost every department.

We get Torres it will cause unrest with Laporte & stones, regardless of the injury niggles they will both get during the season .

so sky sports reporting it as well , hmmm

@richards30

Nothing like a 'City prepared to pay 60m for Torres' claim headline to being Juventus to the table.

Just as they were 'bracing themselves for a €95m bid from City' for DeLigth the day Bayern came to town to negotiate.

Just going off that video he looks like a Laporte clone. Anyone know if he can play lb?

£42m for Torres is decent tbh. Enough about his great to fit in well, enough that needs sharpening and improving for Pep to get into.

I think we wouldn't sign anything special in Torres, just an ok signing but feels a bit meh to me.

Gvardiol and Cucurella seem to offer great skill and personality and those should be targeted.

For a slower change we could sign Cucurella now and keep Zinny for another year and sign Gvardiol maybe on a lower RC next summer.

Ake isn't good enough, so why should Torres be?

We need someone coming in to push our other lads to their limits.

If someone is out there and backs himself to do that, we should pay whatever it takes.

I don't see Laporte staying beyond his existing contract at this time, but obviously that could change if he continues to start.
For me Torres is a left footed John Stones if John Stones would have stayed in Everton. If pep gets hold of him I think he could become as good as Stones.

Think of that famous quote from Boateng where he said that Pep taught him how to defend.

Good CB overall, really good playing from the back and maybe a little bit soft when it comes to tackle. I wouldn't sign him, not because he's not good enough, he just doesn't add anything different on our current CB. Would definitely sell shirts as hell

Everytime I've seen him which admittedly isn't a tonne I've thought he's a liability. Don't think he's anywhere near laporte's level and don't see him being any more content with the backup role than Ake. Unlikely to cost less than what we are going to get for Ake and will likely need time to settle. He's also not homegrown and whilst that isn't an issue for us right now, with sterling and Ake out and Walker not having many years left, it may be one in the future. Not seeing the benefits here.

I like him, basically a taller Jonny Evans. A more cerebral defender who adapts to what his partner is doing in the mould of Stones & Ake, as opposed to Dias and Laporte who go out there to play their own game. We need to maintain one of each option for both right/left of the position.

The games I've seen not been anything about the lad but if are scouts have seen something them bring him in lots of ins and outs this window

Needs to hit the gym if he comes here. Gets bullied far to much by big strikers. Emerys system has protected him a fair bit. He’s a very rough project for Pep. he’s more similar to Laporte just a level below. he is surprisingly quick. But overthinks. His level ups in the games against Atletico , Barcelona and Madrid. But his level drops against the lower teams in league
