I can't decide whether rags are stupid enough to believe the 'shirt sales alone will pay for the player within a year' line, or they believe if they say it enough times it will come true?

The media feed and the swallow any old rubbish.

I am in mid Cheshire, hardly representative of anything but the only new rag shirt I have seen is from the unemployed pillock next door who buys every shirt as soon as it comes out so it is not an extra shirt sale. He can afford it - he never goes, never has and never will.

So, the vast majority who bought an Ibrahimovic shirt are going to fork out an additional £65 (or whatever they charge) on top to get a Pogba shirt? I'm sure some will, but your average fan won't be able to afford two shirts.

Also, I read on here that Adidas get all the money from shirt sales, so United won't get an extra penny on top of what they are getting each year for shirt sponsorship. The shirt sponsorship will go a long way to paying for Pogba and Ibrahimovic though.

Common sense says that manufacturers pay out such huge sums so they can make profit for themselves, not for additional money to the clubs they already pay for rights.

Some advertising is to raise profile and brand awareness but the aim is it to make more money.

You have to wonder about the whole sports clothing industry and the way they sponsor football clubs all over the world, not to mention other sports' like basketball and golf - Rory McIlroy and his lost 15 mill per year for example.

I may be an idiot but I have been confused regarding shirt sales for a while. If the manufacture takes the money why did City go to such lengths to control the selling of their replica shirts. I believe you can only buy City shirts through the club directly which is I believe unique.

City shirts are on sale elsewhere

Ok but if I walk into a sporting goods shop here in South Africa ill find shirts for most leading European sides but not City. Is there a reason or is it just a huge conspiracy?

When it looked like we were signing him last year I said he looks a promising young player but will he make it and is he worth 70 million? Fast forward one year the same applies, only now he is worth over 100 million. He shows potential in flashes but so do a lot of players. He has the physique and technique but so did Balotelli. Of course he is more professional than him but I am not convinced he is going to dominate midfield in games but time will tell.
