Paul Pogba

You make good points, I have a few concerns about this one given he is quite injury prone, isn’t particularly a hard worker (be amazed if pep got that out of him) and would demand a ridiculous wage and signing on fee.
No doubting his ability but I don’t believe he is the correct fit for us going forward.
Mate what you're not fully considering is the toxic environment he's in. He made it clear last summer that he was leaving on a free this summer.

There's a difference between being lazy & unmotivated. Yes, he's had injuries, but hasn't KDB, didn't Aguero? What about Laporte? We bought Gundog injured & like the $6m Man, we had the technology to rebuild him.

Think about it. All you've accused Pogba of being wasn't ever the case at Juvé & isn't the case with France. Think why? He can't single handedly repair all that seems wrong at ManUre, & as for being lazy? Would you rather a true footballing talent who uses his head & the ball, or a headless chicken who can run a marathon every match?

It's Pep we're talking about here, so there's your answer. We don't even coach players to slide tackle, let alone rely on players who specialise in running about all game, but offer little else in the way of big game quality.

We need players who can competently put their foot on the ball & carry out Pep's instructions with skill & dexterity. That's Pep's philosophy. Keep the ball & use it wisely & intelligently & we then negate the need for a Gerry Gow.

I don’t think Pep gets signings forced on him tbh.

I'm damn certain that no one gets signed for the first team squad that Pep does not want. In fact, I am astonished that anyone would think that. Pep may not select all out targets but he will tell Txiki what he needs and have final veto from a footballing point of view - someone else will make the financial calls.

I am trying to take partisanship out of my opinion of Pogba. If I imagine he is coming from psg, and had a similar performance record over the last 5 years, I would not be excited by the signing.
When I add in to my thought processes that he's coming from 'that lot' it becomes Impossible to see any upsides at all.
His character, his history, his attention seeking, his lack of effort, and off field bullshit are all black marks.
If we sign him I will trust in the club management, cos they have rarely let us down, but as soon as he puts in a shit show performance, or an half arsed attempt to track back, or is the cause of a goal or defeat, the knives will well and truly be out for him from the fans.
He must understand that he has to be 20% above the effort and endeavour of any other City player, because the enormous 'rag' drag factor will be with him until he scores a goal that wins us a trophy.
He is better going to psg, there the fans will love him. If he snubs big, big money and sign on fee at psg and settles for trophies at City, he may be willing to turn his nose-diving career around.
Let's see.

Without doubt there are plenty of question marks over Pogba and he is older than our ideal targets usually are. However, the guy that plays for France would be a useful squad member and there are plenty of examples of big clubs buying older players and it proving a good purchase.

Also, Pep and his coaches beleive you can still improve players into their 30's.

Signing Pogba would be a big risk but he could be sensationally good in our team.

I would much prefer De Jong or Rice but, as Tolmie pointed out, who knows what the budget is. Now if we signed Pogba and De Jong, that might not to too dissimilar in total cost to signing Rice for the reported asking price of £150m.
His age doesn’t worry me at all. 29 was old for a player 20 years ago, it isn’t now.

I think weighing it up against other potential options is the pertinent point. For me, anything above £60m/£70m for Rice is just throwing money away. West Ham might say “we want £150m” but I want a night with Margot Robbie and that won’t be happening either. If we were looking at a midfielder and saying money isn’t an issue, Rice wouldn’t even enter my thinking. The money should be going on Bellingham.

Alternatively, FDJ in some form of swap deal for Sterling would be a good option. It probably suits all parties, and as we have seen in the past the figures in these deals can be massaged somewhat for FFP benefits.

All transfers have an element of risk, even Pogba on a free. If we get the United Pogba, he might not have cost anything in transfer fee but approx. £300k pw for someone who is half-arsed isn’t going to sit well with many. There will be strong views either way, but if Pep thinks he can get him playing then I think at his best he gets in our side.
