Pellegrini extends contract

Think about it we need a big season this year if we win the league he may stay but this is purely to keep press of his back .
TBH mate, the speculation over Pellegrini's job is all of his own making. Everyone could see that we needed to go with on striker last season but he was too stubborn to shift his position until his job was at risk. A year's a long time in football and Pellegrini stands as good a chance as any other manager of winning the league, but not if we return to the ruinous tactics (or should I say non-tactics) of last season.

I just hope he has a good one, I think his time of sticking to his 442 philosophy is thankfully over. Right now I sense he's in survival mode, but like I said its a situation all of his own making and one I think was wholly unnecessary if only he'd shown the traits of a winner and done what was necessary for us to retain our title. Whether that was by beautiful or ugly football, frankly I wouldn't have given a damn.

I always felt like Mancini before him after previous success he deserved the opportunity to put it right. Our last two managers have both favoured the 4-4-2 so I can only conclude they must have both considered with the players available, and the way teams set up this gives us the optimum chance of winning.

What we have never had, in comparison to previous seasons, is more flexibility provided by Sterling, who can play anywhere upfront if the need arises. Last year I moaned the loss of Sanchez because to lose a striker, you need a player who can contribute goals out wide, and if you get rid of a striker, and therefore limit your options a player who can fulfil that role in the event of injury. Sterling is our Sanchez and consequently we can afford to get rid of a striker. For the last two seasons we have had either 3 strikers, who can only play the centre forward role so you can see why the default setting was two up top, as otherwise we would have had a lot of wasted talent sat on the bench and also question marks where the goals would come from as Navas, Nasri, Silva or not the most prolific scorers. Sterling I think will hit 12-15 league goals this year and that will make a big difference.
Whilst I respect your point mate, I'm sorry I have to disagree about having to go with 2 strikers last season. The two periods where we went with one striker were our two most productive of the season. If we had wasted talent sat on the bench because we only used one striker, then so be it. We should have done what was necessary and used this summer to acquire a better balance squad as I think we have.

I was particularly delighted to see the unhappy Dzeko move on to be replaced by Kelechi as I don't think we need more than 2/3 top class specialist strikers the way we stand. I reckon its far more important for us to have high scoring midfielders to underpin our attack and if fate would have dealt us a better hand, that could/should have been Hazard/Aguero/Sanchez. At least we have Kun and have finally began to redress that tactical imbalance by bringing in Sterling and hopefully KDB.

Absolutely fine to disagree. I was really putting my Pellers hat on to rationalise his thinking and the reasons for him sticking with the two upfront. Like I said I really wanted us to go for Sanchez for the very reason it would allow us to be more adaptable in tough away matches and also in European games without losing a significant goal threat.

We definitely played better last season when not playing two up top, but 4-4-2 has served us well previously such as last year and the record number of goals. What I think has changed is we no longer have the personnel suitable for a 4-4-2. Fernando is not a patch on Gareth Barry in the defensive midfield role, Yaya has slowed down and now struggles in a 2 and the contribution of Dzeko/Bony last year did not warrant the inclusion of two strikers.

If we do sign KDB, in addition to Sterling It would allow Silva/Nasri to switch more centrally which I think in particular the latter would suit their game much more. Silva, away from home will be devastating in that position but I just hope he is still able to find pockets of space at home matches

I think if Pellegrini was a ruthless winner, he wouldn't have given a toss if he had 2/3 striker sat on the bench with their bottom lips flopped out in disappointment as not many natural born winners would. For winners, its all about the win. If it can be done in style then great, but ultimately its about success. I wouldn't want a Mourinho anywhere near our club as I can't stand the personality of the man or the style of football he's prepared to resort to, but a little of Mourinho's pragmatism wouldn't have gone amiss many times last season.

The season before, yes we score a record number of goals and played some fantastic football at times, but I and others warned even back then that there were glaring deficiencies with the way we were playing and last season those deficiencies were ruthlessly exploited by such footballing luminaries as Hughes, Fat Sam et al. I just hope that Pellegrini has learned from last seasons unnecessary mistakes and we mount a proper and sustained challenge.

Good as a tactical move especially if Pep is lined up, but not good if it's done as some sort of reward for winning a double. I don't think it's the latter anyway.

Hopefully it changes nothing and he'll still be gone at the end of the season.

Says it all really when rag mates think its brilliant he's staying on!

Really, you have rag mates, never would have guessed.

Strange desire to see a manager sacked at the start of a season. Pellegrini might not be the perfect manager, but he won 2 trophies first season and I don't think the players performed consistently enough (apart from Sergio, of course) last time around to square all the blame on the boss. Yet we still came 2nd. Also don't forget the spending limitations we had.

Strange a rag is happy with this, too.
