Penalty Taker

Who should take penalties if Haaland is not on the pitch?

So we have been having problems with taking Pens, Pep knows this yet Rodri says he just decided to take the penalty on his own accord when he hasn't taken them before? How can this be true, how can a manager like Pep who is meticulous in his planing and detail not plan ahead and decide who will take them before each game?

Not saying Zinny would be no good but not following your logic. David Silva was the most accurate passer I have ever seen but his finishing was no where near the same standard. Different skillset and pressure.
Fair that, although i don't remember Dave taking any pens for us tbf. When it comes to pens, i feel like passing the ball into the net is just a much better idea that trying to smash it. Place it into the bottom corner, if the keeper guesses and saves that then fair fucks.

Would not disagree with that, possibly using KDB as an analogy would have been better.

I agree about not smashing it.Totally anecdotal but it always seems the ones with power, hit high result in misses, plus also little chance of a rebound.

Just copy whatever defensive setup São Paulo used when they had their keeper Rogério Ceni banging in over 100 goals from penalties and free kicks
Just grab hold of whichever opposition player ends up with the ball and take the booking if Ederson misses
That was pretty much what Sao Paulo did, although 90+% of the time if Ceni didn't score the ball went out of play anyway.

Dave took one first day of a season v Saints, not a great pen which the keeper saved. Dont recall any others for us but maybe a couple for Spain. Plenty defenders have taken pens successfully over the years, whilst other more attack minded players havent been great on pens. Must be some kind of coaching/sports science available to improve technique .

Name 3 players, in 1,2,3 order, and whoever is on the pitch takes it. If they miss, they miss, but make them practice at least 10 apiece the day before a game, or even at the end of every session.

I’ve said it before...

192sq ft of goal and a maximum of 16sq ft of goalkeeper (with arms raised).

Do the maths! You have 91.7% of the goal to aim at without even trying to send him the wrong way! Just don’t psych yourself out, hit it with decent power and don’t try to be balls on accurate in the corners, as your margin for error decreases rapidly!

If you split the goal into 1/6ths, with two rows of 4’x 8’ rectangles, almost anywhere in the top 3 rectangles scores PLUS at least one of the bottom side rectangles scores if the keeper goes the wrong way. Throw in that the keeper can only cover HALF of the remaining two rectangles, and it’s statistically harder NOT to score if you keep the ball inside the goalposts and hit it with any reasonable amount of power.

And, even if the keeper guesses correctly and you put the ball anywhere on the edge of the 16sq ft he can cover, unless he gets the 2sq ft of slightly separated hands on the ball, there’s a very good chance the ball will still go in off his body!!

So, simply address the ball, pick a side and try to choose the upper rectangle, hit the ball with a modicum of power and you are almost certain to score. If you do that and the keeper saves it, then “Bravo, Keeper!” but don’t act like you missed the penalty, and never take one again!

The probable reason Ederson is so good at them is he picks a location, hits them hard, and doesn’t give a fuck! That’s all it takes!
The trouble is that penalty practice by every player in the squad delivers 100% success -and then they get a real one and all the practice in the world isn't worth a Salah two and a half somersaults with two and a half twists off the ten metre board. It just goes to shit!

I went with Ederson, I have a feeling he would love to take the penalties and be really good at them ala Chilavert or Rogerio Ceni

Zinchenko for me.

The Iceman.

Cool as a cucumber, he’s the heat temperament in the squad for it.

Oh and Silva took plenty back in the day and was utterly woeful at them lol
