The goals might be the same width each week, but players aren't machines. In training, get the best player in the world to try and hit the same spot ten times in a row, and they can't do it. Each chance will be a few inches one way or another, and that's what I mean by luck in a match. So many of our goals will have a lucky deflection, or will be hit just a touch more sweetly than a similar chance. No team converts all their chances, and over a season City have usually been almost bang on their xG. Last season we had 535 shots in the PL, and scored 99 goals from an xG of 95. Over time it evens out - most chances are missed, yet that all add up, and City having more chances absolutely is the reason why they won more games.
We do concede a lot on the break - it's the nature of our game, but the goal yesterday had very little to do with being on a break. There were plenty of players between Gray and the goal, but he scored what's been described already as a goal of the season contender.
Overall, I think we've been a bit mixed this season, and I suspect that the main issue is that we have less control with Haaland instead of a false 9, and Pep is trying to compensate with a more methodical approach.
