It's not a defender we should be looking at, we have a quality defence, it's the system we're are playing.

There's another thread about "who would you buy with £120.000.000?" I'd spend some of that on a defensive coach, one that could teach pelligrini about defending with the players we've already got. Other than that I'd buy two more keepers and have the three of them playing between the stick every game.

It doesn't matter who we buy, Pelligrini's system does not work in the prem!!! Anyone who says it does because we scraped a league title with worldly players are walking blindly into a disapointing season.

Buy a defensive coach that can help with defending tactics. The system may of worked in the Spain, but this is a completely different league.

Spot on. i've been banging on about this for ages now. The players we have are more than capable, there's not many better around, it's the system. Unfortunately for us, we'll have to wait until next season when he's replaced to see any change.

And what system might that be? Because as you obvioulsy know pre-season we played a more 4-3-3 style, while we ended the league last year in an 4-5-1 formation. Seems 4-4-2 has gone out of the door, although we did play our best football eve rin that formation, scoring goals for fun. But we wouldn't have that now would we. My opinion? It's not all about formation on paper, it's the way the players execute it. And there often lies the problem.

In my view its a managers job to get the best out of the players by playing them in a system that suites their style.

You could also argue that the teaching has been piss poor if the pupils can't get it after two years teaching?

The highline in my opinion just doesn't work, due to either the league's strength and pace or the lack of pace from the back four and the holding midfielder. Possible the lack of discipline doesn't help, but if you put all that together then as a coach you'd realise that defensively we were very poor considering the talent we have.

It's not all about formations, but about the system you play in that formation, who does what.

Not having a go mate, just saying.

KDB and Pogba by next week. ..
It's ridiculous the amount of bad mouthing of the board. This is the middle of a fantastic window and the impatience is staggering.
I think the system being adopted is just as important as the personnel's ability and/or form. We all blame the high-line but forget that Kompany was top notch in MP's first season in charge and the only issue we had about him was his recurring injuries. The only reason why I won't go for a central defender now is finance because I wouldn't trade any of Pogba and KDB for some Portuguese or Argentine bulldog. But if we can afford all three and still comply with FFP limits, I'll go for a central defender in a heartbeat.
Please note that I'm not making a case for unsuitable high-lines but just trying to ensure we don't cover up players' deficiencies with unsuitable excuses.
