great football is irrelevant if you end up with little. Charity shield doesn’t really count does it, we didn’t start our season to win the league cup, we’ve lost the fa cup and champions league to far inferior sides. Our 100 point season United came second and lost the fa cup final, second in two major comps, no one would say that was successful. We’ve had a bad year but we are allowed it considering what we’ve achieved. Time to regroup and go again

The dippers will do a whole new round of photos if they win the community shield, they will include the champs league (even though Munich or PSG will be winners) then they will ask uefa, fifa, the echo for dispensation to have a badge on their arm and tell us it’s the most prestigious trophy in the history of the world

Trying to play great football has always been relevant to City supporters in the 54 years I have been a supporter, even in the lean years when we only got a few glimpses of it every now and again. Enjoy watching great football while you can, it's an underrated reward for 90 minutes of your spare time and memories don't need shiny trophies to brighten the down times.

having supported city for 53 years, during the 90s great football really didnt matter,we were happy if we could string two passes together ,and the only moments of great football was jamie pollocks amazing own goal:)

We win the league cup each year by going strong for about 3 games lots of clubs aren’t interested. We have the squad to go the FA Cup not arsed what the scousers do it it.

Can’t include officials and it sounds ridiculous.

utd won’t get anywhere near Liverpool next season so I think it’ll be us of them again. With utd and Chelsea possibly challenging the year after.

These were all genuine scenarios that we’ve seen come to fruition over a number of seasons.

Vying for every trophy whilst another club only challenges for 2 has a huge impact, especially at the thick end of the season when finals approach where each game impacts on the next.

Liverpool finished 25 points behind us prior to running us close to the line In 18/19. Whether it was intentional or not the officials gave them numerous decisions that the majority of clubs simply would not get. Offside goals, penalty‘s/free-kick‘s for the slightest touch, and let’s not forget the amount of calls the opposition were denied. Who is to say that United don‘t see similar calls next season and wipe that 33 point deficit out? It’s not as if we haven’t seen it happen this season.

There are many factors when you decide what has been a successful season, not just who wins the Prem or CL. This season is seen by many as a disappointment, some a disaster, and judged against the last 2 very successful seasons then it is almost certainly a disappointment.

However, when you put it into context along side those seasons and the difficulties that we have faced in this then you just have to say that 2nd in the PL, quarter-final of the CL, semi-final in the FA Cup and just winning the LC is a very average season for us.

Personally, it quite amazes me that, after everything I’ve seen over my lifetime supporting City, I can think last season was an average/disappointing season. I suppose it’s all about context.

Good post but I’d disagree about the cups with our squad to be honest. If you look at the fixtures they weren’t difficult in either cup and with our squad fatigue could hardly be a factor as he changed the team every week even when it’s a period of few games. The 18/19 season we had such an easy run in the cups and then were out of Europe by the quarters. Scousers obviously then played 3 more games than us to win it. Obviously you could say yes and we went on to win the league. Very true but both teams did amazingly well that season so it wasn’t like one blew up to throw it away or anything. If you lose the league with 90 odd points you’ve had a great season and have to hold your hands up and say fair play to the winners.

The drop off from us this season however has been big in comparison to the last few years and I refuse to believe it’s because we went all the way in the league cup in February. We then had a very long rest anyway and still lost 4 after lockdown 2 of which were huge games that we should have been fresh for. If anything lockdown should have played into our hands and disproves the theory we were tired by trying to win 4 comps(3 anyway really because 2nd place was quickly boxed off too).

One odd dynamic around Pep's extension is that I can almost see him more likely to leave at the end of next season if we have a great season next year than if we have a poor one.

Not sure we have, Walker has always been very good in my opinion, Cancelo has contributed little or nothing.

The injury/sale of Sane has meant Sterling playing more on the left, which to me lessens his and our effectiveness.

I was only adding some context to the questioning of the decision and was referring more to the right back slot. Whilst Cancelo’s presence may have improved Walker the consequence was the Portuguese has not been given enough game time to develop into a player who does contribute enough. We may never know if he would have done so.

My sources tell me Pep is looking to agree to extend for ONE season - maybe a rolling one year extension.

If the last couple of seasons are anything to go by, our position in the league at the halfway point is an indicator of where we will finish by the end of the season as well. Guardiola can easily lose the dressing room as many managers have in the past and if the murmurs from the players are anything to go by many are already beginning to question some of his decision making. I'm sorry but the fans being in the stadium isn't the only way to gauge the support of the fans. Social media plays a huge role in determining whether the fans are behind the manager or not.

I don't think he has done enough to warrant a contract extension. I'm not a huge fan of rewarding failure. I'm sure that the higher ups set certain goals at the beginning of each season and I'm not sure winning one domestic trophy was the only goal the club had this past season.

I think the club should wait until the midpoint of next season to determine if he should be offered a contract extension. This would depend on the results, overall morale of the players and support of the fanbase.
