Pep's contract situation | 2 year extension confirmed! (pg1817)

Pochettino seems to be a popular choice but I cannot understand why. He has won 4 PL Manager of the Month awards between 2013 and 2017 and absolutely nothing else. It would be a bigger risk for us than it was when Barcelona appointed Pep after a year with their B team, but at least he was familiar with the players. I realise surviving so long with the Spurs chairman was a notable achievement but apart from a smiling face and reasonable English language skills and plenty to say for the media why would we go from a serial winner to a serial non winner. He may be available, but at what cost is he free.

Yet you liked a post suggesting that Bielsa/Nagelsmann should be our new manager.

I forgot that they were serial winners.

I cannot dispute any of that but a solid Southampton and a Spurs team that looked good only to crumble under pressure are some distance from a PL winning team. Arguably, Spurs are an "elite" club, at least traditionally, when compared to Leicester City and Blackburn Rovers and they have a rich owner, but with, as you say a very good team, they only briefly looked like Champions. Aside from that I find it hard to believe City would have invested so much in bringing in the newer players they have in the past 18 months, particularly the teenagers we haven't heard so much of yet, if they expected Pep to leave and have to start all over again. I am very mindful of Khaldoon's often stated words about planning for the medium term and the long term and not just on a reactive basis. Circumstances can change very quickly but I would hope that Pep would put together a well balanced title winning squad by summer 2022 (preferably earlier) but I suspect the desire for instant success may not allow for that time frame. On the bright side of the doom and gloom we are only 5 points off the leaders with 33 games to go, or 34 or 35 points short of avoiding the drop, which was our immediate concern not too long ago.
You make some good points but if I could come back on a couple.

Poch‘s Spurs squad was inferior to the likes of ours and one or two others IMO. And of course Southampton, with respect, were a lower tier club altogether. Making the most of what you’ve got marks out a good manager and Pochettino did well with resources that were strictly controlled by his Chairman. Lack of trophy winning experience is a valid concern but one that needs perspective.

With our management/executive personnel you would have hoped for seamless consolidation, continuous development and replacement - NOT a hiatus followed by rebuilding or “transition”. Arguably we are behind the curve despite big outlays on transfers.

He is a dickhead who can only win things in scotland , i would be gutted to replace pep with him or poch
There both good managers , and both overachieved at spurs and Leicester , with our squad and budget I’m sure they would both win trophies With us , just as pep has and pellegrini did and Mancini did before them.

Has to improve his performances the next couple of months to get offered a new contract imo. Too many mistakes in team selection and a lot of the players don't look motivated enough. Both of which he is responsible for.

An interesting and worthwhile read.

Particularly the end bit
A good read, and in my opinion what this thread should look like,a balanced look at both sides instead some of the stances taken by s few in here, and the he's finished or been left behind stuff.

That was an interesting read. As the author admitted, it is a lot of ifs.

I think the most interesting points he makes are about how we've relied on world class players to drag us out of the mud on off-days, plus the fact that we have a system that needs an Aguero-type player at the tip. Hopefully the challenge of changing how we play to get the best out of the players we have will be enough to keep Pep here a few more years. It's still unclear how many of our problems are down to having a load of injuries at the same time or how many are down to unsuitable players for the system. As the article point out, Dias and Laporte getting a regular run in the side plus Rodri growing into the role will go a long way to getting us sorted.

What IS football, if not ifs and buts?

Fair point. He did concede that they were a collection of little ifs, to be fair.

As a City fan, you'd just like to see Pep tweak his methods a little to suit the current situation. Whatever the rights and wrongs of not buying another striker, we could be without Aguero and/or Jesus for large parts of this season, certainly the next few weeks. I think some change is required to get the most out of what we have. Apart from Mahrez and Mendy, I can't criticise any of the other players, I just think we need to create a few more chances.

I think Pep will judge continuation on the progress in the Champs League this season. If it’s no improvement on last season then can see him walking away.

There will become a time when either way the club will need to know. Potential new players will want an indication on who they will be playing under.
