Pep's contract situation | 2 year extension confirmed! (pg1817)

I was just watching the little vid on the City app of Kompanys debut and post match interview.

Imagine going back to then and telling your younger self that this midfielder would eventually have a statue built of him having won 4 Premier Leagues, 2 FA Cups, 2 League Cups, 2 charity shields and walked away with absolute legend status.

Imagine the look on your younger selves face thinking your taking the piss.

Just amazing how this club has turned around.

I think you are right. It is reasonable for us fans to set the bar higher. I am firmly in the camp that winning the Premier League is a more impressive task than winning the Champions League but the CL has more prestige worldwide and, whatever any of us think, we need to win in Europe to continue moving forward. Winning the Champions League would put push us to the next level.
However I think our squad is still short on quality. I don't think many of our team would get in the present Bayern team, and certainly none of our defence.
Agree on all that aside squad quality, I think you can refer to Bayern side itself. Flick has been in charge only since late November, he initially joined as a mere assistant coach, Bayern looked bereft of ideas and were 3rd in Bundesliga including a heavy defeat to Frankfurt, they wanted players like Sané to improve them, and he took just months to sort them out, now they look unbeatable.

Point being, our squad has quality, it's just confidence on big stage, the mentality of winning, sometimes tactics don't necessarily win you games on field, it's the players or individuals. We show that in Prem because the players believe it. In CL the approach has often been negative in the most important games under Pep, the minute a team doubts itself, goes negative in CL it's curtains. We saw that with other sides in the competition too. Just want this side to be fearless when they play big games, and I think eventually we will win CL (would not surprise me if it happens right after Guardiola leaves, like it happened with a few other teams).

By the end of the season though Laporte was back and Pep got it wrong in the two big games.

A quality central defender would sort it out but is Pep only able to manage when given more or less perfect players? Let's not forget that Bayern won with Alaba and Boateng in central defence with Thiago in front of them. A few months ago that would not have looked like a credible spine of your side.

Pep's got a potential credibility problem that may vanish in the opening weeks of the season. I hope that the Lyon defeat is going to become history fast but for the moment it hangs around poisoning the air. We could just not talk about but it would still be there.

It might be good for us. I want the players and coach to come back with appetite sharpened.

Fair points of Laporte coming back, but that still didn't address the loss of Kompany.
Add Stones not pushing on and being injured and Otamendi struggling.
Mendy taking time to regain form, and Cancelo not hitting the ground running.
Garcia was only used because we had no other options. Fernandinho couldn't play every game.
Who knew Cancelo would be better as left back than Zinchenko!

I personally feel Pep has been plaiting sawdust in defence all season.
Have to say he still royally fucked up against Lyon though.

This last season there was only two teams that could win the title, us and Liverpool.

The Premier league is at its weakest in terms of competition.

To finish 18 points behind the scousers was a very poor performance.
Premier league weak ? You need close to 100 points to win it now - surely that has raised the standard ?

As much as I would love to see it, have a feeling that if Pep saw potential he would bring him in.
Vinny confirmed on Belgian TV a few days ago that he turned down Pep's offer to replace Arteta. Also said they still speak.

Presumably he didn't want to give up on the Anderlecht project because 1. he's not a quitter and 2. Anderlecht took a risk on him and made such a big deal out of his return and he didn't want to abandon them

I may be cynical here, but, if he signs a one year extension, is it just to keep the press off his and the clubs back for this season?
And he will still leave next summer?
It’s not just about Pep - the whole set up of the 2 guys on the board from Barcelona was made to attract him to the club - nobody should have a job for life but surely when Pep leaves his mates on the board would follow ? That’s ok as long as we replace them with similar personalities to keep the structure of the club in place.

The defense were so weak this season. But.. The only defender we have is Laporte because Otamendi, Stones, Garcia (are slow), Fernandinho (????). We need defenders!!

I see this coming season a 4 horse race. Tough to call but as things stand right now I see Liverpool1st Chelsea 2nd City 3rd and Manure 4th. I as see Mourinho sacked before Xmas. KK would make a difference but I’d want Latuero Martinez signed before City challenge for the title. VAR will never allow City to win chumps league.

Maybe after going public like that he won't get a second offer.

He didn't say anything remotely bad, it was a 'hot seat' segment of quick fire questions, they asked him loads of things and he just answered yes or no. It was also reported at the time of Arteta's departure that he had been offered the role so it was never really a secret to begin with, and I highly doubt Pep would have an issue with him not wanting to give up at Anderlecht after half a season (he hadn't even retired from playing at this point and was still a key CB for them)

Having a chat with my mate about this last night.

I was saying that for me it’s a no brainer to give Vincent the managers/head coach role when Pep decides to go.

Yes, he hasn’t got much managerial experience but what he has got is exceptional people skills, natural leadership, respect and authority which is more than half the battle. He also know the club and hierarchy inside out.

Experience is often over rated for me. Take Hansi Flick for example. Only ever been an assistant- he’s given an opportunity and wins everything.

It’s a big yes from me and I hope we can welcome Vincent home soon.
Several threads about this and Im sure one is still on page 1

We only conceded 2 more goals than dippers - but yeah seemed vulnerable to the counter attack - most of our defeats were similar - Pep bought Stones - Fernandinho is no better than Otamendi at centre half - Walker might have been worth a try at centre half - just for his pace - are there many really fast centre halves around now ? Most young kids with pace are coached in attacking roles - they all want to be the next Sancho Sterling etc - if there are few centre halves around to match the pace of the forwards then maybe the answer is to tweak tactics and formations to give the defenders a chance

Sorry I disagree. Vinny hasn't got the experience. At best assistant like Arteta. He hasn't exactly the world on fire at Anderlecht has he in fact they had such a bad start he had to give up the management role there!

Not got his coaching badges yet
That why..
