Why does this make it sound like he was going to go, but didn't want to leave during the coronavirus pandemic?

"I don't want to leave before saying goodbye" is not exactly what I'd hoped for when he signs on to be the manager for 2 1/2 more seasons.

I think it's possible that he was genuinely undecided and the last 12 months have played a part in his decision to extend.
I guess it's normal to keep your options open with the world being the way it is.
Regardless, I'm just made up he's made the choice he has.
