Petrol prices

So what’s the evidence from the mechanics then? If it’s a problem then they need to be recording the actual problem and logging which forecourts have been used and which vehicles are affected, otherwise it’s all just very weak evidence to me. Millions use supermarket fuel without any noticeable issues.
I don’t know, but it seems a coincidence that lots of different people using different mechanics get told the same thing.

I doubt that the mechanics have shares in Shell or BP, so I don’t really understand their motive.

If electric cars were a lot cheaper a lot of people would buying them.
Bring out a £10k electric car that does 200 miles for round town, no need for electric windows, mirrors etc, just something that gets A to B and they’d sell shit loads. Stop packing cars full of tech thats not needed, heated seats, a screen that you can watch Netflix on just why!

But it’s not one mechanic suggesting this, it’s lots all over the country.

Do RAC, GF, Which not charge for their opinions?

Engine lights can come on for a multitude of reasons, you are correct. There seems to be a correlation for a fair number of people where they come on following filling up at supermarkets.

Its not about being a trusting person, although I’ve used the same mechanic for 20 years as he’s a friend of the family. It’s unlikely he’s trying to blag us.

I still have the same car 4 years later and have never had a light come on since stopping using supermarket fuel.

It might be a coincidence, or it might actually be true.

All fuel must meet a minimum standard so there is no such thing as rubbish petrol. Branded fuel may include additives that are designed to help your car burn the fuel more effectively so in that sense they are superior fuels.

It isn’t common but it’s far more likely that your car is/was particularly sensitive to needing those additives than the fuel being below the minimum legal standard. Possibly your ECU learnt the fuel you used and how it ignited and once you switched it threw an error but that shouldn’t typically happen as cars have fairly broad ranges - unless it was a highly tuned car with no real range it could work in. In theory running the fuel for a time would have taught the car and the error would have eventually resolved (I think it’s something like 10 restarts without the fault and it clears itself but that does vary by manufacturer).

Some cars are just bloody temperamental - I had an alpha that would light up like a Christmas tree anytime you looked at it… awful car, had something like 4 lambada sensors on it and they’d all take it in turns to complain about something or other.

I used to play the game of stop it exactly on £20.. damn £20.11, nevermind I'll put £25 in, etc.. now though I'm playing a different game, it's called staying at work untill the site shuts so I get full value out of my petrol.
There was a Welsh ice cream man on the radio today, saying he might have to stop selling ice lollies, and then a landscaper phoned in saying something similar.. people are struggling

i dont think we have seen the peak of this yet and wouldnt raise an eybrow if it hit £3 a Ltr, the Ukraine crisis is not going away and i think it will only escalate even further but however crank the clocks back in time and the biggest mistake was to close our refinery's and import fuel in the form of petrol and diesel rather than crude, many ask why we put our eggs in one basket and decided to buy from the Russians and it was simply to meet our Co2 targets no doubt probably put upon us by the EU,if we dont refine we dont pollute during the manufacturing process, a simple way to bend the rules as at the end of the day the fuel has to be refined if its here or Russia and will still pollute the earth, from what i remember the UK has around 4.5 years reserve of fuel in the form of petrol/diesel i think Borris has to start releasing some of this to keep prices down

Vicious circle looming, they want workers at Manchester airport, probably paying a minimum wage, how does that person get there, probably drive as public transport at daft hours doesn’t exist, how far away do they live? Cost in what fuel will cost why would you even bother, your commute will probably cost you a third of tour wage if not more.

I discovered an additive for diesel that supposedly makes standard fuel into the super more expensive,EHN-99
It’s improved my mpg by about 10-15%
