I'm a bit conflicted by that. I love the kid and genuinely think he'd walk into the starting XI on quality, but I'd like him to stay out of the spotlight as long as possible, and being one of the few players not in an international squad might have given him opportunities to start the first game back while the others are tired.

Well he'd not be alone i think. So the spotlight would be shared at least

Youre right, Southgates probably going to call a bunch of the young ones up. I'm guessing Maddison will be there unless his trial gets a bit messy. Callum Wilson and Winks too. Sancho even?

I could definitely see Sancho being called up if Phil is. I could see Maitland-Niles getting a call up too, Mason Mount as well.

Maitland-Niles is injured for a couple of months and Mount is struggling in the Championship so that would be foolish. Sancho definitely deserves a call-up and if Phil got one I'd be delighted for him although I think it's a bit too early.

Didn't realise Maitland-Niles picked up an injury. Mount isn't struggling in the Championship, he's played in all 4 games and scored once, and last season he was Vitesse's POTY in the Eredivisie, that's more than Foden or Sancho have done.

The goal was a big mistake from the keeper. Have you watched him at all in the Championship? Yes he was excellent last year but he's actually been pretty poor so far this season.

I have yes, I know his goal was fortunate but he's looked fine to me. Far from what I'd call struggling. Either way, he might not be England ready right now but he'll get there eventually.

The clamour from the media for him to be starting every game for City will be insane if he gets into the England Squad. I think this international break is too soon really, if he has a productive season I think spring would make more sense.

Referred to as “Phil Foden, that poor kid at Manchester City” this morning by that cnut Neil Ashton in the Sun, in an article about England players not getting a game for their clubs. We’ve only played two games FFS!
