Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang

And losing the players, great srategy that, will take us a long way.
There's more than one good player around, and a few people at the club are paid very well to go and find these players. If turning down one player is the end of our summer then the problem is bigger than playing hardball.

Other teams lose out on players too. He's ONLY a player, and we have to set boundaries / budgets.
If there's a car you really like and the salesman is asking way too much money, do you still buy it even though it's massively overpriced? it's very rare that someone would do that.

Otherwise, where's the end to it all? how much will the next reserve goalkeeper cost? 100m - just because we 'need' one? We must be seen to walk away from deals.

You are absolutely right - individual deals set a tone and overpaying for one player changes the dynamics for future deals. You can already see that we are not really welcome at the 'top table' when Bayern or Real come calling clubs gift wrap the players and hand them over but, when it's us clubs hold out for more - because they doubt we will walk away and will pay 20 per cent more.

Cry should target him but not at any cost. I'd pay 60-65 maybe for Kroos and that's it.

Not really. When troy Deene is worth 25mil, 65mil is bang on market value.

Surprise - Troy Deene isn't worth 25mil.

We got Gundogan for 20 and he's leagues better.

I don't think he is worth that. That is what the market deems his value to be with the injection of tv money.

A player is only worth what someone is willing to pay.

Based on Leicesters willingness to pay that, aubameyang is worth aprox that amount. It's not our fault we will have to pay that if values of other players are distorted/ over inflated.

It's the market.

Won't be long before some cretin uses the non-argument "it's not your money so what are you worried about"

Very popular that one. Still it's something to say that lots of posters will agree with ;)

One thing to bear in mind though - a player's 'worth' isn't really an absolute figure. It's what they are worth to any given club.

If Messi joined United, they'd sell 1.5 million shirts and make back 30m in the process.
Is Messi joined Accrington Stanley, they'd sell 10K shirts and make back 200K in the process.

Messi's 'worth' depends on who is buying.

Still, we've already paid a heavy price for Bony and Sterling without seeing much return on that investment. They might come good in the future, or they might not, but 70m+ is still right up there with the world's top transfers, and is this guy really setting the world alight? I don't think so.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing

Personally I don't think we overpaid for Bony 'at the time' as he was a top premier league goalscorer
