From a BBC story of the financial distress in the EFL:

"The dependence on owner funding is bad. Craig Hemmings (son of long-time Preston owner Trevor who died in 2021) wrote to supporters on behalf of the Preston ownership.

"Preston are a really well-run, sensible club. They are not chasing the dream and not over-spending. But he pointed out their annual budget is £24m and. of that, the Hemmings family provide £12m every year. Who replaces the Hemmings family? Who comes to Preston and says 'starting point £12m-a-year'.

I guess FFP is only for clubs trying to gate crash the Euro Cartel Association and I’m sure if we ever play Preston, they will be ignorant of the FACT that they only exist because of a Sugar Daddy…something that has a long and illustrious history amongst almost every club in Britain, not just the big clubs who NOW believe their growth over the last century has been wholly “organic!”

Every PL player contract should include a “relegation” paragraph denoting specifically how much your pay will be reduced.

In addition, the PL should dramatically reduce parachute payments and spread that money across the entire EFL and Conferences on a percentage basis.

I get your idea and it sounds right, but giving much lower league clubs more money will just inflate the cost of players at the grass roots level wont it?
Also if there are too many incentives to spread the money about they might become targets for owners who love to syphon off money from clubs.

I know for a fact that a well-known journalist at one of the so-called 'quality' papers was handed a dossier showing incontrovertible evidence of corruption at PGMOL and wouldn't publish it.

They've all got their snouts in the trough and if you upset the apple cart the trough runs dry.

I think the clubs that need the money to survive are so far from money laundering the cash as to be preposterous. That said, EVERY CLUB’S BOOKS should be audited every season/every other season to ensure viability.

I hate to say it, but in the modern era, where BIG money talks, 4 large professional leagues, not to mention the numerous semi-pro levels of the game, might be too much for football in England to bear.

With disposable income becoming increasingly in demand, the escalating cost of football is creating a tipping point that, if we have not reached it yet, we are close.

The saturation of football on TV is almost complete, and the UEFA/FIFA plans for even more games seems like the straw that will break the camel’s back.

The rich will get even richer, and all on the backs of a few hundred players across the globe. In addition, I’m not sure where the oxygen that sustains football…$$$…comes from in the future IF WHOLESALE REDISTRIBUTION OF REVENUES isn’t the answer.

Coca Cola have no interest in Harrogate vs Hartlepool, nor does Heineken or the largest betting syndicates that fund football.

The grass roots game, for all the flowery, grandiose talk, is getting further and further behind where the big clubs want to be, and where UEFA/FIFA want to take the game, it should be scary.

There needs to be a ticket price fix for a significant portion of attendance

For example, all away tickets are £20 and ALL away fans receive a full 10% of capacity. Home team season cards are limited to 80% of home capacity and annual increases capped at inflation. The other 10% of tickets are affordable £20 tickets available only to Club Card holders with picture IDs. Change percentages to your liking, but something concrete needs doing.

Remember a game refereed by Poll at Maine Road which was both diabolical and very clever at the same time. It was towards the end of the season City were just safe from relegation and Arsenal were pushing for a European spot. The difference in quality between the teams was such that it didn't need any help from the referee for Arsenal to win. However, for the early part of the first half 2 or 3 City players were booked for something and nothing. Arsenal were given soft free kicks when they lost the ball in attacking positions; City were given free kicks when they had retained the ball and were breaking from defensive positions. With about 15 minutes to go with the match won for Arsenal 2 or 3 Arsenal players were booked to even up the statistics.
No major controversial decisions but lots of little thing given against City.

Look I used to ref as a 17 year-old. I’m sure many here have. I referred youth games, mostly U-12 to U-16. I recall a couple of instances where coaches (managers) did things that pissed me off. Like one who would switch her kid (who was her team’s star and played striker) into the keeper position any time the opposition had a dangerous free kick, or even corner kick. And one who when winning would encourage his team to time waste by kicking the ball into Richardson Bay when putting it into touch. I can tell you I refereed those teams more harshly because I was irritated at the relative lack of sportsmanship for local youth amateur leagues. But I was a kid doing a service; it was a way to earn a few bucks on the weekend, and none of these kids were going to be pros. Professional referees should be far far above the “emotion” of a match — but sometimes I see them acting viscerally the way I did in those situations. That’s ridiculous. Conspiracy or no, what we do have evidence of is that too large a portion of those in these roles are simply fucking terrible at their jobs. I mean TERRIBLE.
