PL charge City for alleged breaches of financial rules

Personally, I’d find it hard to believe that such a threat was made. It would likely be seen as undiplomatic. However, if this had actually been intimated by Abu Dhabi at government level to the UK, I’d be surprised if it would make a difference. After all, it didn’t stop the Government putting the kibosh on the Abu Dhabi backed bid for the Telegraph and Spectator.

Also, the value of UAE investment in the UK is relatively small compared to that of other countries. In 2021, the UAE and the UK signed agreements for further inward investment into the UK and I’m not sure the UAE would renege on that. Even if they did, they would be replaced by other investors eager to take advantage of any fire sale. The UAE are far too smart for that. Lastly, this is really a matter for City, the Premier League and a multitude of lawyers. It would be inappropriate for either Government in my view, to involve itself in such a parochial matter.

Shankly was wrong. Football is not more important than life and death. Both the UK and UAE have far more weighty matters to concern them. Not least, the Israel/Gaza conflict, Iran, Yemen, Ukraine/Russia and China’s sabre rattling over Taiwan.
You make some very sound pints points but, equally, I would suggest that it's practically certain City's being charged by the Premier League has been mentioned at governmental levels.
City believe the club is being mistreated. (Probably because they ARE being mistreated). They are a multi-billon pound company with the strongest of ties to Abu Dhabi. Of course, the AD government are going to, at the very least, express concern. It's inevitable that this concern will be couched in pointed language ("thought this was a place where we could do more business buuut...." etc).
I'd agree that it wouldn't go so far as outrage and explicit threats but the UK government, in spite of a great many acts and appearances to the contrary, aren't fucking idiots. (Well, not entirely).
I imagine the Premier League will have been warned that they'd better be bloody sure they can irrefutably defend any awards they make against City.
And rightly so. Any government would do the same to protect its citizens' foreign investments - and not just its highly-connected citizens either.

Go there tomorrow then and tell me what frozen food you can get from the "newly" expanded Denton Discount Store. Farmfoods hasn't been there for ages mate, permanently closed.

You make many valid points too. I suspect the reason this is taking so long is because the Premier League is only too acutely aware they’d better get this right. If they fail their authority not to mention their credibility will be damaged and hasten the appointment of an independent regulator. However, should City feel aggrieved by any sanction levied against them, their redress will be through the courts and again that is another thing the Premier League will be wholly aware of. I hope it’s all done and dusted now quickly. For all our sakes.

The thing about refereeing in the UAE League is ridiculous! It has nothing to do with the country or Sheikh Mansour. It is not even near the ridiculous fees that are reported.

The UAE League allows clubs to request foreign officials for certain matches. To do so, the CLUB has to pay the League AED 175,000 (GBP 37,500).

That amount is then spent on 1 Official, 2 Linsemen, 1 VAR official, transportation cost, accomodation cost, and the League management fees.

Oliver has been contracted ONCE, for a match between Al Ain and Sharjah, at the request of Al Ain club.

Was it not the same Michael Oliver who, just this week, overrode VAR to gift Arsenal a goal on the final day of the season..?
