There are slightly different rules for these but both will have to be finalised (assuming we beat Steaua) in the next 3 weeks.

For the CL we're allowed up to 25 senior players with 17 free choices (can be foreign or homegrown), no more than 4 association trained players and at least 4 club trained players.

In the PL, it's the same 25 man maximum but it's no more than 17 foreign players and at least 8 homegrown (doesn't matter if club or association trained players).

Kelechi is a foreign player up to January, when he then becomes club trained, so on that basis we have 5 Association trained players and 21 foreign players. In January I'd expect Moreno to take the foreign place vacated.

That means that, for the CL squad, we have to drop 5 players, at least 4 of them foreign players. For the PL we have to drop 4 foreign players. If you're not in the PL squad then that's it but it's not a disaster if you're not in the CL one as long as you're in the PL squad.

Bony, Mangala and Nasri seem to be 3 of those 4 and I'd expect Kolarov or possibly Fernando to be the other. For the CL squad we could possibly omit Zinchenko, who could still be in the PL squad.

Players like Adarabioyo, Angelino, Maffeo, the Garcia, Celina etc don't count as they're all homegrown u21's (I think).

So from a PL point of view, as we've only got 5 homegrown players (Hart, Clichy, Stones, Sterling and Delph), we could buy up to 3 more if we wanted (although they wouldn't be able to get in the CL squad unless someone else was dropped).

2 points.

1 - Surely you mean Gabriel Jesus to take the foreign spot in January and not Moreno?

2 - Am I right in thinking that Denayer was under 21 on 1st January 2016, and has been registered as a City player for more than 2 years, so doesn't need to be in either the CL or PL squad to be eligible to play, or am I mistaken?

1) Yes
2) Yes (you're right, not mistaken)

Do players take up non-HG spots if they're u21 even if they're not home trained? I remember reading somewhere once that if they're u21 at all they don't need to be declared.

Of the players we currently have I've worked it out as follows:

Joe Hart (HG), Willy Caballero

Bacary Sagna, Pablo Zabaleta, Pablo Maffeo (u21 HG)
Vincent Kompany, John Stones (HG), Tosin Adarabioyo (u21 HG)
Nicolas Otamendi, Jason Denayer (HG)
Gael Clichy (HG), Aleksandar Kolarov, Angelino (u21 HG)

Ilkay Gundogan, Yaya Toure, Alex Garcia (u21 HG)
Fernandinho, Fernando, Fabian Delph (HG)

Kevin De Bruyne, Jesus Navas, Leroy Sane (u21)
David Silva, Oleksandr Zinchenko (u21)
Raheem Sterling (HG), Nolito

Sergio Aguero, Kelechi Iheanacho (u21), (Gabriel Jesus)

Of our current squad, I'd imagine Mangala, Nasri and Bony will be out the door soon, which means we'll have a total of 27 players.

Of that group of 27, 6 will be homegrown (Hart, Stones, Denayer, Clichy, Delph, Sterling), 4 will be u21 and home trained, 3 will be u21 non-home trained, and 14 will be over age, non-home trained.

We're pretty fucked if we don't sell at least Bony, Nasri and Mangala then. Adds to the madness of selling Denayer if you ask me.

In the PL no, in the CL you need to have been at your club for 2 years as well as be u21. So, for example, when we signed Balotelli and Sterling neither needed to be added to the PL squad as both were under 21 as at the 1st of January the year the season started. However, as neither had been at City for 2 years, they both needed to be added to our European squads, Balotelli as a "foreign" player and Sterling as a "homegrown" (not club trained) player.

So Denayer doesn't take up a CL spot. Would be madness to sell him.

I think jason denayer is not home grown player as he was loaned to galatasaray instead of british club
