PL v CL

Reading some of the posts on this thread, I don't think many understand how difficult it is to actually win the CL, and how rare a win is for any club, no matter how good. I could list recent winners as an example but you can check them for yourselves so I won't bother.

Whilst we have a very very good squad these days, our chances of actually winning it are still pretty slim (see uniteds record, or chelsea, or arsenal, or even liverpool, not to mention real madrid, or even barcelona).

Qualifying for the knock out stages however should be well within our teams grasp, so failing to do so is a failure, beyond that luck is required, both in the draw, and in the games, and anything beyond the groups should be considered a bonus.

In the PL though, we should be in the top 2 with our squad, and probably should win it as things stand, and any league over 38 games is far more difficult to win than a cup competition with a mini league and then a knock out.

Suggestions of 3rd and losing the CL semi are meaningless, because we should be 1st or 2nd in the PL and still achieve the same CL result imho.

Anyone thinking option E in the OP's list is the best option is a fool imho, why the f**k would we want to do that ? Unless money is the only driving force behind your support of City, in which case I don't understand you at all.

Re: Sv: PL v CL

Winning the league is a priority. Being dominant domestically over a number of years is the best prerequisite for success in the champions league.

Liverpool were hardly dominant domestically in the years leading up to their CL win in 2005.

You think it's foolish to want to win the Champions League - the greatest trophy there is? The one that says you're the best team in a continent, not merely a country.

Does anybody think the relatively low level of enthusiasm for the CL is due to the top four teams in some countries qualifying? Would it be higher if we went back to champions only and a straight knock out with an open draw?

Got to aim to win the league. That is the priority. When we win that a fair few years and defend it then we can concentrate on Europe more. It is important to do well in Europe for the brand of the club and for the prize money but not at a detriment to our league form. Chelsea won the Champions League but it would have been much more celebrated from outside of Chelsea's own point of view if it had have been deserved, they got a lot of luch and whilst they won it, compare it to Bayern's win and Barca's. I would love City to win the Champions league but it would be far greater to be as part of the legacy of a great City team that conquered all.

Where did I say that ? I said anyone thinking E was a fool, I stick by that, no point finishing below 4th imho.

Definitely A.

I'd be happy for us to get knocked out in the group stage every year if we won the Premier League every year.

I know it's not what the club want and in the modern world of marketing the brand the Champions League is more important but form a selfish point of view, I'm a supporter who goes to around 75% of Premier League games but only 50% of Champions League games and would be fairly confident I wouldn't get a ticket for the final and I hate watching us on telly.

-- Mon Aug 12, 2013 1:02 pm --

I don't think it'd make people more keen as it'd be easier to win it.

It would however, ruin PB's poll.
