Player Pay Cuts during Crisis

Well it's only up to £2500 per month but the process relies on the employee agreeing to furlough. If the employee doesn't, the company has 2 options - continue to pay full wages as per contract or give them a 30 day redundancy notice. I can't see many clubs wanting to risk players leaving in those circumstances
Bet they’d try it on with those almost out of contract

Lets face it, if our first team squad waived their wages for the remaining quarter of the current season, I'm pretty sure it would fund every other job in the club.
I posted yesterday, ONE month of KdB's reported wages would pay the salary of 33 people at £30k for a year, and that's not a dig at him, just an example. If the government then waived his tax on that, it would still save the country a lot of money.

I don't know about your line of work, but in mine I'm not a dodgy tackle from losing my career every time I go to work(I'm not saying footballers have a hard life my point is every role has instability thats just life), as soon as we say contracts mean nothing then as a society we are fucked. That's not to say I don't think footballers perhaps should use their wealth in times like these proactively, but it's their money

Yes its a short and potentially unstable career but no PL player should be in a position where they are under any pressure at all after 1 or 2 seasons.

For context... I run a small manufacturing business, if I get ill or have a road accident (25K miles a year on the road), I'm screwed and relying on insurance (which I pay through the nose for). Not only am I screwed but my 3 staff are probably screwed too.

The current situation might well kill the business but I'm doing my best to protect the staff. I personally paid their wages for the month last week, and we are looking to furlough the staff so that we still have a business in a few months.

We're not claiming anything from the Gov other than the 80% wages (and we can't actually do that yet). I've paid all our creditors personally. We're owed significant sums which I can't go after because everyone is in the same boat.

Not looking for sympathy, just highlighting that there are a lot people relying on small businesses which are inherently unstable so theres nothing special about professional footballers.

City have told the players they don't need to, it would purely be a personal choice.

I don't like either this rush to judgement or mob mentality to force people in to it.

To be fair I think this is the correct course of action, I'm not advocating clubs forcing this onto the players. I do think the players collectively should be looking at the morality of taking their wages during the crisis. It has to be their decision.

I'd like to think if I was a multimillionaire footballer I'd be unfortable carrying on taking the cash.

Yeah that is only fair. What gets my ire is the entire financial system it is built upon that enables them to be offered this in the first place. Maybe human nature led us here inexorably or did we just take a slight wrong turn.

Please don't in any way take that I am belittling anyone or trying to negate people's hardships, I'm not.

One thing to remember here is that not all of the players are from these shores. Yes, they are currently earning their living here but their primary concern would more likely be with their respective homelands. There are some that have already donated substantial sums to the health causes from where they are from and that's worth mentioning here too. Some others will also have gone under the radar with donations too no doubt. We shouldn't castigate players just yet but we certainly should be looking at those clubs who have chosen to furlough staff already.

yep it is like people are taking their annoyance of the football bodies trying each and every way to finish the season and taking it out on the players,it is wrong to point fingers at players, they were offered a contract and they took it,it is not their responsibility to take wage cuts, they can donate money which would be easier than trying to alter contracts anyway
