Player thread: Dedryck Boyata (2013/14)

Re: Boyata

Schoolboy defending for their goal today with two big mistakes in the build up but he recovered well after that and formed a good partnership with Mangala as the game progressed, probably a 7/10 overall.
We actually overcame the same problem we had in the Burnley game today as the aerial power of himself and Mangala stopped Fernando from suffering from those balls over the top to the big cf.

Not too sure I'd be happy to see him start in a tougher game just yet but he's fine as backup.

Just thought I'd bump his thread, thought he had a pretty solid game today, didn't do much wrong, and I thought him and Mangala looked OK together, considering Kolarov was having another 'mare, and it was like playing three at the back first half. He's doing the job required, allowing Demichelis a well earned rest today, he looks a lot more confident than he has previously.

Agreed mate. I like him and think he's showing he can slot in and out and do a job. He's at last showing some progression again, after seeming to stand still for the last three years. His passing is better and he's more comfortable on the ball.

When he was 18 I thought he could go all the way with us.
He still might, he's still young for a CB, the thing for me today was that he looked confident, did the simple stuff well, yes the odd mistake, but no more than Vinny makes in a game.

We should no longer be nervous if he's playing there, I think MP's management of him has been very good, he's given the lad confidence, he'll never be first choice, but he's good cover. Confidence is a huge part of being a CB, so well done the manager, and well done the player.

Never again at RB though :)

Re: Boyata

Not sure I share others on heres confidence in him at all. For me, he's a ball watcher, almost constantly not paying attention to anything else. The goal is a classic example, but he's doing it all game. There was a couple of moments just after half time when they hit long balls into the box and he's just watching whats happening, he seems completely oblivious to their players untill the ball goes in their direction and it's something he's done in most of the games I've seen him play. He's just about doing a job, but I wouldn't want him anywhere near a game against someone decent. When we release him, it will be interesting to see what level of team is after him.

I agree. I compare his level of concentration to someone like Lampard who is totally aware of his surroundings and always looking around before he receives the ball. He never even considered that there might be a forward behind him running into the box. I would hope Pellers and his coaching team notice this as a major flaw in his game and If he can improve then he may have a future as a top class defender.

Re: Boyata

I like him. Better than Nastasic IMO. The more games he gets the better he'll be.

Re: Boyata

I'm not sure why he's getting so much stick for their goal. It seemed to me that when the ball was played behind Mangala the Wednesday player had at least two yards of space. Boyata couldnt be sure that Managala would make that up. He had to come across to stop the Wednesday player cutting in and having a clear run on goal. He had another City player, Sagna, behind him who should have been able to pick up the Wedndesay goal scorer. But it was still the case that Mangala was in a better position to make the tackle than was Boyata. It seemed to me that he made the right decision to cover Mangala.

There were a few City fans around me ysterday who were blaming Boyata for the goal. Half of them blamed him for not getting closer to the winger, half of them criticised him for not picking up the goal scorer. Which suggests to me that it wasnt an obvious choice for him.

People tend to follow what the pundits do these days when a goal has been conceded, and start pulling apart players' positioning - criticizing a yard here, a yard there. If a perfectly weighted and directed ball has been played in to the forward, then what they are asking the defenders to have done prior to the pass is follow the opposing players stride for stride, at risk of being pulled out of position where they fall under new criticism from said pundit. Sometimes it just happens that you've been outplayed by the opposition.

Boyata did what I like to see in these occasions and make a definite decision one way or the other. I thought he did okay yesterday.

Re: Boyata

Not concentrating for their goal. Not helped by the 'keeper who should have been screaming at him at what was about to unfold in front of him.

Okay in the second half overall though.
