Player thread: James Milner (2014/15)

If we keep players like Milner in are starting 11 we will never kick on and dominate the league

Yes i agree, however he will never be first on the team sheet in a top club unless his work rate is what you need in that particular game. His work rate is not questionable, his skill level is. He is a great squad player and hope he stays to win lots at a top club. He will then be able to look back at his career and say he had a big influence in City becoming a winning club.

The reality is that in any team hoping to challenge for the Premier League and Champions League every year, only absolutely world class players (+ the goalie) are guaranteed to start. I love James Milner, but he's got to be honest about how good he is. He can either be a squad player for a title-challenging team, or a starter for a team going for top 4. And even that's not guaranteed. Would he start ahead of Ozil, Cazorla, Walcott and Sanchez at Arsenal? I suspect Arsene Wenger would use him in exactly the same way as we have, as a hard-working utility man in a more physical game. Milner is a player that relies on having more skillful players around him. He's not going to go to a lower team and become their main creative player. And if he does, he won't be as effective as he is for us.

I like Milner but two things stand out for me.

One is that if Silva doesn't play Milner shouldn't as he's like a fire engine trying to find fires without him.

Secondly at home Milner is far less effective but his work rate in away matches and his running both going forward and covering means he so much better on the road.

I'd love him to stay and if so he should probably start 19 matches - being every away match.

Played superb yesterday. His work rate phenomenal and has helped us out alot this season and will continue to the end of the campaign where even if we dont win it, at least he's made a big impact on the team.

Please stay James!

He is still hugely underrated/appreciated by the media and some City fans alike. He doesn't provide the quality in the same consistency as the likes of Silva and Nasri but away from home in particular he is often the craftsman for a lot of our best play and chances and he works so so hard which is what you need. The best teams in the World need someone who does the graft - it allows the skillful players to do their best work and put in their energy where they can be a threat to the opposition. He set the league record this season for distance covered last night. Highlighted by the Aguero goal for 1-0 where he cleared the ball from our box and was then in Stoke's penalty area and would have picked up the ball had Begovic got a hand to it. Instead he arrived in time to watch the ball go in - but that was a phenomenal run from him and it's what you need.

He is irreplaceable in my eyes. I don't think there is anyone out there we could buy that would do what he does for the team. We can put him on to bolster our defence, to add to our attack or to put in a lot of running. He will do it no matter where he plays. The consistency lacks and that's why he wouldn't be a starter at home week in week out but he saved us against Hull with a quality free kick and he worked tirelessly last night and scored another cracking goal.

I know we are trying to keep him at the club - we really really need to.

It's a very nice assessment from Pellegrini that he was not mainly important because of his goal, but largely also because of his work off the ball (with or without possession). And based on that one sentence from the Mister, now you get why we just need him to sign that bloody contract.

It's not like he is irreplaceable, but remember, we had to buy a 28-year old player for 30m to make an improve on Barry. It did happen and it was still great business, but losing Milner for free would already hurt, not to mention what might cost his successor.

James Milner is a great player and he does have a place at this club. But the thing is his place isn't starting week in week out which is what he wants. I really do hope that he stays but that is down to him and what he wants, but if he was to go who would take his place and the workhorse that we need in certain situations?..

There isn't many players out there that are like him with his quality that could do what he does for us.
